There’s a bit of turmoil (as I’m sure they expected) right now so I just wanted to send a welcoming shout-out to the people that are going to be downloading Unity for their first time!
Despite some disagreements (which are fine!) I just wanted to let you know that I think one of the best assets of Unity is this community. I’ve gotten lots of help here as I know many others have, too.
I’ve also never enjoyed working on the client-side of a project before as much as I have with Unity. I personally can’t wait to see the new creations people, both new and experienced, are about to bring forth!
So welcome and have fun and please take part in the community!
waves a Unity flag around and plays some moving music
The Community is awesome and in the main very Helpfull there seems at the moment to be a small family spat as mentioned by Timmer but that Hopefully should be resolved shortly.
But Greetings and salutations new users you have now joined the A Team
Top Tip for noobies : If you want to know how powerful Unity is - then send a PM or email to Dreamora or JTBently asking them if its capable of building something like Crysis or Call of Duty!! then ask them how to do it, or indeed if they would do it for you - They love that kind of conversation
I’m currently porting my previous project from Dark Basic to Unity. The assets need converting from .x to .3ds (which I’ve mostly done now), and then I need to write the scripts.
Getting used to the way that Unity works is taking up half my time, but progress is being made
Once I’ve got a few more bits done I might stick something up in the Showcase forum (I guess that’s the right place - but it feels more like a place for completed projects rather than WIPs).
Hah. Yes, I’m shy with my project a bit so don’t feel like showing it off until I’m nearing 1.0. Should be around 2012, hopefully before the world ends though!
Any new set of tools has that learning curve hump you need to get over. I find it frustrating and slow going while climbing it up as it’s time figuring out how to do something; once that clicks you get to the fun part of just figuring out what you want to do and getting it done.
I haven’t played around with DB but from what I’ve seen Unity should prove to be a powerful upgrade!
Bits of it (like the lack of realtime shadows) are a step backwards, but I’m sure I’ll cope. I think I can fake half decent shadows for this project.
The bits that I definately love about Unity are the scene/game views. No more tweaking lines of code to move an object a few pixels to the left, running the game to see how it looks, escaping out, moving it a few more pixels, then trying it again.
Now I can see exactly how everything looks straight away
Well since I started my project at the design phase in '05… of course in 06 I lost it all and had to start over and pretty much put it on hold for a year since that took a lot of heart out of me.
But my real goal is to have it in a pre-release state in early 2010 and by the end of that year have it at a 1.0 state.
Welcome to the community yezzer Adobe really has dropped the ball. I’m so happy that Unity has done this and look forward to all the new users this will continue to bring into the community I’ve been telling all my friends that they should switch to Unity and now they would be crazy to not try it
There is alot of information for all the new game dev’s here so do check about, first recommendation is the Unity tutorials page and then the Teaching section of the forums.
Hi guys, I’m one of the many who swarmed here because of the announcement that Unity 2.6 was going free!
I tried Unity before when the windows version was first released and it was great. The only problem was that I didn’t want to folk over $200 just to mess around with a game engine.
Now that it’s free I can use it as long as I want and who knows I might actually make something worth while.
