Can someone point me to the rules and guidelines governing use of Unity’s default Master Server/Facilitator?
From what I understand Unity’s default Master Server/Facilitator is there only as a convenience to developers and is not looked at.
So ok, developers could use it while they are developing their games and not yet have had time to setup their own Master Server/Facilitator.
And perhaps developers could be using it while testing their games as well, but what about when they are distributing free demos for things like KickStarter or even Steam Greenlight.
And what about when they are selling Early Access copies of their games or even when they are sellnig releases of their games?
One question is can Unity’s Master Server/Facilitator handle the load if you have developers everywhere putting their commeriical games on it with endless millions of users all hitting on it.
(I do not ask this because I have any plans to do so, I peronsally think it would be nuts to do so, but because someone is I think doing this already over at the Steam store there is released game being sold I’m pretty sure that is using Unity default Master Server/Facilitator. Hey who knows perhaps more if I really put time to look…)
Are you talking about our legacy Master Server? If so, this is only supposed to be used for testing purposes and developers are expected to set up their own upon release. http://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/net-MasterServer.html
So is it a problem if someone is using it for a game that they are presently selling?
I bought game the other day on Steam that been out for a little bit and they appear to be using your default Master Server/Facilitator.
I and others have tried contacting the developers, but for well over a month they have totally ignored all attempts.
Is there someone to report it to, I can give to Unity the game type name that they are using.
Part of the problem is that number of games have made it through Greenlight on to the Steam Store that are little more than the demos that come with the Unity Asset Store and the people behind these do not even bother to setup their on Master Server/Facilitator and are basically using Unity’s default ones. Eventually as more and more people buy these games I would think it would become problem for Unity’s default Master Server/Facilitator to handle the load.
So, if you would like I could send details, just let me know who to send it to. I rather not publish it here because I would not want to name/shame anyone publicly and get myself in trouble in the forum for doing so.
I’m not sure if we actually kick anyone off that server currently, I know we turn it off from time to time but we do state it in the docs that it’s for testing purposes and we have the source code to make your own available. I would say contact the developer but since they are not answering, there isn’t much we can do.
