what are your favorite games, genres, or settings . . .

hi,

perhaps bit weird question, been thinking over a few of old, or favorite genres, for instance the point-and-click adventure, or also classic strategy titles, for instance Age of Empires, Starcraft - series, and also a few early horror - series, either Silent Hill, or Alone in the Dark . . .

looking at those old ’ hits ', have started asking myself if there was a way to make them in Unity, is it easy to make a ’ clone ', or the mechanics, what about the effects, how to make the UI, navigation, however been looking at the top - favorite content ever seen, and trying to figure what, or why want to make stuff in Unity, either because video - games have inspired, or entertained me, want to make a tribute, perhaps for the challenge of coding, or figuring very advanced features, or quality, or then to work on my own favorite hits, classics, or also ’ tropes ’ ever, anyway here’s a list of some of the best stuff ever played, wondering if could make this features, or quality in Unity, and also what’s the best, or personal favorites ever, etc etc . . .

  1. Resident Evil 2, or 3 – scary, suspenseful, super - cool from start to finish
  2. Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, 10
  3. Zelda : Majora’s Mask, or Zelda : Ocarina of Time
  4. Diablo 1, 2
  5. Need for Speed Carbon, Hot Pursuit, also Undercover

so, those are among the better titles ever played, and want to make a tribute, learn from them, or perhaps make something better, it’s more bit interesting if that could be done in Unity, features, graphics, post - proc, effects, AI, writing, or art, not sure . . . . :sunglasses:

think these are important questions, perhaps also for other dev, also bit wondering what // why people are working on their own stuff in Unity, and overall bit debate over if some old classic, effect, or even AAA - title could then be made in Unity, anyway just bit curious as to what people are working on, that’s all, or if people are also trying to make tributes, or derived - clones, perhaps bit harsh word, or if people also get inspired looking at the better titles, or quality . . . .

At the moment I’m completely burned out and barely play anything. Occasionally I fire up beat saber, pistol whip or x-plane (VR) for sight seeing, but that’s it. 30 minute session at most.

The last things I had interest in were largely crafting-oriented with sandbox element. Where you can make your own character, have a world, get thrown into it and can make a mess there. For example, CDDA fits into that category. From the games I had Dwarf Fortress (last played 3 months ago) and Planet Crafter (last played 5 months ago) fit into that category. Or Dyson Sphere (last played 9 months ago) and factorio (last played 10 months ago). There’s also Orb of Creation.

Basically, if say, 15 years ago I was interested in a story-oriented experience, and deep writing, eventually interests shifted towards tools where you can make your own things and sandboxy experience where you do not have a set protagonist railroaded storyine but can make your own character, and mess with the world or build things in there. Also there’s interest in simulators. For example, learning how to use an actual life piece of machinery can be a lot of fun, especially when done in VR.

Having said that I like dark worlds with rich story. Shadowrun: Dragonfall, Dark Souls. (Elden ring didn’t work for me, I never finished it).

Regarding use of unity, from the titles I listed Planet Crafter, Dyson Sphere and Orb of Creation were all made in unity. Games like CDDA and Dwarf Fortress can be implemented in unity as well. Factorio likely would require optimization, but people already managed to make dyson sphere and that one’s harder. Unity also has good API to implement constructors, editors and VR experience.

this is very important, even if we can’t go 100 % into real - world problems here, know the struggle, the sometimes blank page, or for me the ’ infinite ’ worlds, or could make almost anything, think it makes a ton of sense, and either having that amazing-ever idea, or then something one is passionate over is difficult, as for me got no answer to the stuff, other than perhaps being either supportive, or encouraging to take a break // look for a team to support, or work, or simply join a few jams, and not really think, or at all serious effort . . .

as for the series, also think they’re amazing, esp. Shadowrun, think the genre is amazing, and we need more content, even if it’s only 1 - 2 hour arcade, it’s also some of the best stuff ever, Dark Souls was also amazing, however perhaps it was bit too punishing, or thought it was bit depressing, however if someone made a ’ Dragon Age ’ clone, with the difficulty of Dark Souls think rather play that, there was also the samurai - setting ’ Nioh ’ that was a Dark Souls - clone, however was more fun, and think it had a nice story, though writing that stuff is difficult, or one needs a really good topic, or idea, sigh making video - games isn’t easy, however perhaps then it makes even more sense when it succeeds, or one gets that fan - reaction, or perhaps also the critical ratings, at least 100 % get the feeling // sense of being stuck, progress is difficult, or having simply a need for a break, or perhaps to learn other stuff, if it was me feeling that way prob. look for a team, or to be in a few jams, think the Metroidvania - jam, also there are a few horror - jam make sense, also it’s perhaps among the best content, or even prototypes ever . . . :sunglasses:

do you need any help, it’d be fun to try and make a bit Shadowrun - setting, or a few characters for fun, sometimes that’s all you need, or could talk bit over what made those settings amazing, or how to make a quality - tribute, however only so much ’ story - crafting ’ here, think could make a few reference boards, and talk ( early ) ideas, etc etc . . . .

I appreciate the offer, but at the moment I have my hands full with RL stuff. I can’t start any side projects or joint projects.

Regarding the rest of the post, Nioh 2 was very good. They took souls formula, made it harder, and then added a very well done cinematic storyline to it. It was one of somewhat recently (1 year ago) played games I played and really liked. The only thing that could be improved was loot mechanics. There was a flood of loot and managing it was somewhat annoying.

Also, the attractive part of dark souls in the first place was that it was a honest challenge. Modern games often employ quite a lot of hand holding and try to make the player “feel good” about themselves, which sometimes turns into a power fantasy. In Dark souls you hav to earn your victory.

that’s a very good description of Dark Souls, remember even the early creatures were difficult, or the fall off anything, overall ended up ’ quitting ’ on Dark Souls for that reason, however also the bit ’ dark ’ graphics, it was perhaps overall not rewarding, or ’ quality ', however the genre is very important, also it’s now almost a go - to style, or feature - set, and people are now making that more, or less everywhere, it’s also iconic // learn-from-brutal-setting, it’s one of those settings where it’s difficult not to have mixed feelings, however it’s almost ’ rejuvenated ’ the industry, and made a new benchmark for what content, or difficulty could be, think it’s perhaps among the most important series of the last decades, and only seen the beginning of that type, or style of content, perhaps one could make a sci - fi setting, and add the ’ Dark Souls ’ - difficulty, and either effects, or also iconic weapons . . .

anyway, think it was perhaps ’ Nioh ’ that made me appreciate the genre, the setting had story - telling, not just this weird, or difficult only-reason to even play, and that it takes a very good developer, or super - cool team to even make the stuff, it’s almost as if they added an entirely new genre to the video - games industry, and have also become a fan more after having tried ’ Nioh ’ - series, very, very cool stuff, and we need ( quality ) clones, however it’ll take very, very serious, or ton-of-experience devs, and perhaps a really good setting, or starting - idea, what if one made a Star Wars, or another-planet sci - fi over the Dark Souls - stuff . . .

wanted to say, think it’s an important genre, also wish people made more of the stuff, it’s perhaps a bit too difficult for me, however at least it’d be fun to support others making either more clones, or even adding to the genre, Dark Souls remains a favorite of mine, and for sure classic ( difficulty ) content . . . . :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Final Fantasy and God Eater

myself a fan of Final Fantasy, think Final Fantasy 13 was one of the best stories, also content ever made, my goal is to make something in the graphics of Final Fantasy, not sure there are any interviews with important people working over the series . . .

overall, the various themes, or pre - viz is something like to learn, think Final Fantasy has a ton of cool stuff // never got a chance to play ’ God Eater ', however know it’s gotten also good reviews, etc etc . . .

 :hushed:

yeah me too.:stuck_out_tongue:

I like epic adventure games with laid-back game play. JRPGs, Zelda-like, or Elder Scrolls. I want to pretend to be epic sword guy for hours on end without thinking too hard or being too challenged.

I also like 3D platformers, metroidvanias and point-and-click adventure games.

Actually, you can go deeper:

Or even:

think these are important questions, also personal goals, or standards, of all the things one could ever work on in the modern video - game engines, more, or less everything that’s ever been made, at least going ten years back, think knowing one’s favorite content is 1. important, and 2. useful over ’ charting ’ a course over all this freedom, could be almost anything, art, style, also quality, various settings, or ’ tropes ', instead of trying to make anything, or then follow any recent trend // money - succes, then focus on the stuff that makes sense to one, was the most entertaining, or perhaps also a genre, or last cult - niche one might want to add to // for that reason, it’s of course only a simple question, however it could help ’ focus ’ a dev - career that could go anywhere, and then either get lost, or ’ break ’ down under the pressure of freedom, or the amazing features, or content one could make over modern technology . . .

anyway, there are several ways to make anything, if one had to be ’ direct ’ about the stuff . . .

  1. work on passion project // something makes sense ( personally )
  2. important title, or message, etc etc
  3. the latest money - maker, or trend - succes ’ setter ’
  4. professional, work for others, the question is answered by the CEO, or boss
  5. work for more indie, or experimental places, or perhaps volunteer work

anyway, of all the questions ever asked myself as an indie - dev, perhaps these two are the most important, 1. what do I even want to work over, or make money from, and 2. what are my favorite things ever // how to make a tribute, or ’ borrow ’ ( honestly ) from a classic, or the buzzword ’ trope ’ - setting // reference - stuff . . . .

also, it’s bit fun to find videos of what other people enjoy, and talk bit nostalgia, or also how the stuff could be made in Unity, and also the effort, learning, or financial - stuff needed to make something, for instance making a 70 - 80 hour Final Fantasy ’ clone ’ might actually be difficult, even if one has modern technology, better art - programs, or also a professional // AAA - engine to make the content . . . . :sunglasses:

among my favorite content ever, it’d be Castlevania :: Lords of Shadow - series . . . .

that’d be something really, really want to make a tribute over, right now working on a Tomb Raider - setting, and getting also references, or fave-ever-lists to get a more defined, or ’ clear ’ sense of what to work on, or art - direction . . . .

think it’s also important to know why one plays video - games, or what either enjoyment, or culture one hopes to get from it, there are several good reasons to even play video - games . . .

  1. get, or then understand important information, historical sagas
  2. enjoy a good fiction, or quality writing, etc etc
  3. plain relax, do nothing, for fun // repetitive
  4. enjoy various, or specific culture, similar to metal, pop, techno, or rock

people have different reasons for getting any content, knowing bit over that could also help define goals, or ’ standards ’ for the content one makes, art, music, writing, or work over production // effects, there’s a ton of on-the-surface freedom, programs, a ’ smorgasbord ’ over what one could make, think there’s overall important lessons one could learn from knowing bit how one thinks oneself, and perhaps also have more fun making video - games, or bit less-the-scope-creep // any-all-culture could be added, think it’s overall helpful to know the limits, various settings, or design, and it’s also fun to talk old classics, where industry is going towards now, nostalgia, or if any of these titles could be made in Unity, etc etc . . . :sunglasses:

anyway, idea was also to talk favorite content ever, or have bit chat over nostalgia, or could be fun to see a remake of a classic, also bit to hear what other people are making, perhaps goals, or design . . . .

Closing, this is just random, rambling chit-chat. Please use the discord for this or get a blog.
