Hey i just want to know your opinion of what are the most needed assets for you or the asset store so i can be guided in the right direction when making model packs. answers can come in the form of a individual (3d-model) asset ideas ex. fruits, crates, etc. or can be an opinion on the most popular theme at the moment (sci-fi,grunge,etc. also these answers can also be submitted through the poll).
This question has actually been asked in various forums probably literally 100 times. And honestly, everyone has a different need for different games. You’re not likely to get much feedback because everyone has seen it so many times. If I were you, I’d just read through the forums, start looking at what people are asking, what difficulties they’re having and what they all need. That’s how I decided on what to do for my asset. I’m not in it to get rich, I enjoy the crap out of it. So by my own gauge I feel my asset has been very successful. It makes enough to motivate me, so if I were you I’d take that route.
Also beware that there are gobs and gobs and gobs of model assets. Your best bet is probably to create whole packs and keep the price reasonable.
good idea <3 but i still encourage voting in the polls
why a poll for ? if people answer mostly sci-fi then you’r going to produce scifi assets, fine …
but i think the correct answer is : excellent assets will sell, crap won’t
I’ve seen excellent assets be basically ignored (not my own or of people I know so I’m not complaining) while many poor quality assets pertaining to the popular genres continue to sell well.
I’d look at what is at the top of the sales charts and make better models for a slightly cheaper price.
yeah, you’re right on genres, i meant, what makes the difference is quality
I’ve almost given up the thought of making art assets for the asset store. Code assets seem just so much more universally useful to me. Doesn’t that also reflect in the top grossing charts?
For sure the right code is universally valuable but art assets will always be niche.
The problem with art assets is that many artists make one or two models based on one theme and then switch to another theme. That makes them useless for a full project.
Whatever you do, make sure you make a big pack with the same theme so they can be used in a project while keeping consistency.
hey trying to make good 3d-models is just a hobby i have and i really enjoy it (creating something that looks visually pleasing from nothing is great), also im not very savvy at coding so ill leave that to the pros. @Kondor0 what you said about the big packs is totally true, and i always plan to sell my asset packs at a cheap price. So far i have 5 mini-packs that i want to release for free so that’ll get my feet wet at uploading to the asset store.
Not sure this is a valid poll. Depends completely on which game im working on, and the next person is going to be working on something completely different.
Most of the stuff is usually sci/fi or medival fantasy for me though.
Yes but an indie dev will most likely work on a game with their favorite themes which may be a common liked theme among many other indie devs; thus if more devs like that theme is should draw more sales (theoretically anyways).
not really. The indie sitting next to me might want to create racing car games. The guy beyond that a WoW clone, the guy behind him a minecraft clone, while im sitting here working on a helicopter sim, which is completely different to the last two games I worked on (one was sci-fi, another a tron style platformer, another fantasy)
Ive brought between 6-8 packs from 3drt.com. If you want an idea, check his site. He covers a lot though, from fantasy to military, to chibbi
yes that could be true, but that’s your perspective of game design and though it may be the most prevalent perspective of game design, there will always be some sort of bias created by society through media that will create a shift in interest ex: COD shooter clones, interest in horror games through “five nights at Freddy” or “Amnesia”, etc.
I agree with James, that poll makes little sense. Better ask yourself what are you in the mood to do and make sure you deliver quality (and quantity if possible).
What do you think? that you will sell more if you make assets with the theme choosed by this poll?
The only thing that drives bias like this is success. Hence the clones that come out after someone is suddenly making millions from an idea.
Make what interests you and what you are good at making. Pretty pointless for me to say go make fantasy weapons if its a subject that you’re not enthusiastic about or dont have the skillset for.
maybe you have already made some , go on with the style
Spot on, and it actually goes a bit further than that. Even asset packs are mostly good for prototyping unless the consumer has skill to replicate the style. The problem is that even the best made pack of models and textures may look out of place in your game if you have other assets that don’t match them stylistically. The models are just a small part of that. It gets more prevalent when you consider texturing and lighting.
true, the problem being talent is not for sale on asset store ![]()
Yes well it doesn’t really matter where the bias comes from, just the fact that its there means that some themes will be more popular than others.
Well im enthusiastic about most themes (finally got a hold of ShaderForge so i can finally get some proper shaders for plants, magic,so on) so i dont mind, What i am more enthusiastic about is making the best that i can make and taking the next step to trully AAA models and texturing.
i honestly find that a good thing for me because i could create something similar to someone else, and as long as i create it in higher quality i can still make a reasonable amount of sales (ex: a medieval interiors pack) (presentation of assets is also key)
