What causes particles in the default particle system to fly upward?

My default PS generates particles in a cone that float upward (+Y). I can’t find where in the inspector this behaviour is defined…I was expecting a ‘start velocity’ or something, but either I’m blind or I don’t understand how the default state is set.

How, for example, would I have a PS simply create particles that stay where they spawn? I can’t see how to do that without countering the upward default velocity in the “Velocity over lifetime” setting.
