First attempt at a cartoon human head in blender, what do you think?
Constructive criticism please.
Also, how do you cut faces without doing a whole loop cut?
This might help with loop placement.

ok, updated the model.
Looks alot better, i applied techniques in that guide, and edited it alot. Looks cooooool.
Looking much better. I see some weird lines on the side of his head though? Don’t think people have them lol.
Edit;
P.s. Ever find a name for your game? Did not see what/if you picked of them.
Here’s a process that helps me when modeling heads. This was in Blender 2.49:
And here’s a more updated version in Blender 2.56:
Good likeness!

Not a bad 1st attempt, post a wireframe and we can really see whats going on
There we go!
It was good, but doesn’t hold a candle to this one girl I met in TJ who…
Oh wait, I misunderstood.
ok, i mean obviously you have your work cut out for you
but the fact it actually resembles a head on a 1st attempt is going in the right direction!
But id bet you learned a lot making it huh? Sometimes it helps to just keep at the same model, and then other times it helps to just start over with the techniques you learned + following more tutorials.
You can make that call on if you want to start over or keep at this one, but sometimes version 2 is twice as good as version 1 just because you learned what you can and can not do
I want to buy this for 100-200$, pm me if interested
looks like a cartoon moon lol. Practice and you will get better though ![]()
gnice.
Thanks for the feedback, guys, it’s really encouraging.
Here’s my latest rendition- i Kinda turned it into Ganondorf …
and don;t worry, 2dfxman1, I still have the version you asked for.
I am absolutely certain 2dfxman was being facetious, messing around, not serious.
No offence man but your head models are not very good at all, they look like glorified blobs. I would suggest you use reference and study anatomy. Watch the videos and and follow the guides that were posted. Also I might suggest searching for Andrew Loomis books, they seem to be some of the best anatomy (for artists) books out there.
Ouch.
Umm… Was that really necessary?
I do not mean to be discouraging or an a-hole, but getting honest feedback is the only way you will progress. When I first started learning 3d modeling I was shit (still arguably not that good), and got a lot of bad feedback from people, it stings a bit, but it was/is helpful to get honest opinions.
I would rather be told the truth, with some helpful advice, rather then be patronized.
Take that for what it’s worth (I’m not a character modeler by trade), but I think using something like Sculptris* to create your base shape then applying your topology ontop of that should be a tad more rewarding.
Hint: the shrinkwrap + extrude operations on your sculpture should get you a nice retopo in Blender:
Plus you can then bake the normals with xNormals to get that extra detail on your low-poly version ![]()
*if Blender finally added adaptive sculpting, just go with that… otherwise Sculptris WILL be easier to use.
I remember being 14 too, so I would ignore him.
They’re a great start, and each picture you post are significantly better than the last. On your wireframe you look like you have a lot of unnecessary polygons (though this isn’t hugely important). When you make a new face try to UV it properly, which will let you make a normal map for it (which is where a lot of the detail comes from).
edit: Also don’t be afraid to go overboard with polygons. It looks like lack of polygons is hurting you, especially when you’re editing it like crazy ![]()
