Much of what you would be doing with physics falls under programming, so you could just go to the scripting section to ask question. Maybe the scripting section could be divided up into smaller programming sub-section, like physics, mecanim, et cetera, but that really isn’t necessary.
Do you have a reason? I can’t really think of why you’d want one.
I think, if we have a forum just for shaders and UnityGUI, we may as well have a physics discussion.
I agree.
Physics programming is much different than just basic scripting.
It’s more advanced and requires much more logic. Having discussion board dedicated to it, can help provide people with a resource to use to ask questions and get knowledgable help and references.
A physics board is something I would use frequently.
Until then, there’s this. Reddit - Dive into anything
Yes, but both of those mentioned are highly Unity specific implementations, GUI is fairly ‘non-standard’ I’d say. The physics implementation is a much more obvious wrapping of PhysX, a well documented 3rd party API, and most problems people will have would be general game physics problems. IMO, physics is more similar to a C# in that respect, and likely shouldn’t have it’s own forum.
But I guess it’s related to seeing Unity’s forums as best for unity specific stuff, or trying to make it more general game development info, in which case I’d vote for a physics forum.
I like that idea!
Shaders I think are fair enough, since shader programming is a pretty different thing to general programming.
But personally I think that the Unity GUI section should be dropped rather than adding other specific sections. The forum isn’t big enough and active enough to split activity over multiple sub-forums (yet), and continuing to promote Unity GUI as the go-to GUI solution is a bit detrimental to newbies - it’s great for some things, but not so great for others (eg: mobile development). Having said that, I have barely used it since the updates in 4.0, so maybe that’s changed?
If i ask a physics question today in the scripting forum, it won’t get answered…
But if we have a dedicated forum for it…like a physics based question to get the force right on a vehicle etc, then i know it will be answered. There are people who love to discuss physics. I for one am one of those people…Not only would I drastically help with the measures of success for that forum, but i’m sure others will too.
So what makes it specific to unity? There are forums out there that talk about this stuff. Questions about implementing your ideas is rather scripting orientated and not physics related.
In my personal preference, i rather just stay within the Unity3D community. I don’t want to have to join a physics forum. I want people from a physics forum to join Unity3D and be apart of Unity3D’s physics forum.
But why are they going to want do that if they’re not already into Unity?
I do like the sentiment of expanding the community, though.
You have not posted any physics question to date.
If you browse Unity3d Answers, there are many questions raised and answered, so you can search for the answers there.
I do not know if there is a need to open a new forum for imaginary physics questions?
I haven’t really seen enough physics-specific topics that would suggest a separate category is warranted. The ones that are posted do get answered, as much as any other type.

I agree. If anything, I’d see a set of forums dedicated to specific types of projects as being far more useful. Lke these:
Minecraft Games
MMOs
Sandbox Games
Run n Jump
Side Scrolling Shooters
And so on.
I’d add
Tower Defense
Turn based RPG
Turn based Strategy
…and probably more. Those are what I can think offhand
Conceptually speaking that is a brilliant idea.
However I wonder how practical it would be in the sense that forum main page is already quite long.
Regardless of what Unity Staff think about this, I think it would be great if the community itself pitched in and do what they can do ie create specific threads instead.
For example in the WIP or here at Gossip or the appropriate section users could pitch in and create threads dedicated to specific type of games. Then anyone who wants to contribute ideas be it physics or game mechanics or whatever could post in that thread ultimately creating a sort of compendium of knowledge for that type of game
No MMO forum please…
dxcam1,
The faster you own up and realize that everyone who comes to Unity3D wants an MMO then better you’ll be.
That comment was not necessary.
We do have a networking forum.
I’m not sure if that was sarcasm or not, but you were obviously not around for MMO Mondays.
