What do you look for in music?

Hi, I’m a musician, and I’m looking to get into making music for games. I figure the first place I’d start is to make music packs for the asset store. While browsing I noticed that while there is some cool metal music, there isn’t anything really epic, or highly produced in the progressive metal department. So I figure for my first project I’ll make an epic metal package.

So my question to any developers is, what do you generally look for in music for games? I’ve been making music for about 7 years, but I guess one thing I haven’t thought about is making music that loops seamlessly. I tend to make songs that have a beginning, middle, and end, but if the purpose of a song is to be loop-able, then I guess those traditional methods of composing don’t apply, unless of course, its for a scene.

What would you look for in a music pack? Would it be preferred to have a mix of loop-able music and cinematic music, or perhaps separate packages for both?

Here’s a rough mix that I made to try to flesh out the general theme of the package. I don’t know if it’s usable since it changes around a lot, but any thoughts are appreciated.

Personally if you’re looking into making music for videogames (this is becoming common now) then there are several things you should consider.

1 - You should always work on both looping tracks and full compositions. This way you can cover any in game music (typically looping tracks) along with title/ending music (full compositions with beginning, middle and end).

2 - Please think about variety. Don’t just make metal or cinematic or chiptunes. Make it all.

3 - Please do some research. Go to YouTube, search game soundtracks and… well, the time will go by as you listen to some great music coming from videogames.

4 - Koji Kondo. Yuzo Koshiro. Manami Matsumae. Falcom. Takenobu Mitsuyoshi. Yoko Shimomura. Look them up.

I do intend to, and have made a variety of music, I just chose to do metal for this particular project. I’ll definitely check out those names.
