What do you think of Activisions new game engine? I personally think it’s mind blowing, and game changing the detail on the face of the characters made me had to actually think if that was a real person or not! Video demo can be seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6R6N4Vy0nE
@iWoundPwn,
Beautiful skin and sub-surface scattering shaders but it’s just a demo. We don’t know how hungry it could be till we see an entire character in a full game with such technique. Nice demo though.
And people say games cant get any better can you imagine blowing his brains out with a shotgun.
Nvidia’s recent character demo looks more impressive IMO. The mouth and theeth at Activision’s one look artificial.
nipoco thanks for the share nVidias looks better but overall I like both! Can’t wait for the future of graphics have come a long way.
Activision is the first one that showcased this tech a while ago don’t know who made Digital Ira, but yes the teeth on activisions look artificial but they can only get better!
nVidia’s is higher contrast and looks nicer, but I don’t know if I’d say it looked more realistic.
I was going to say that it’s a silly use case because you generally can’t afford to throw your whole GPU at just rendering a head in a game. But I realised that that’s not the case - you’d only need to run at this LOD in head-shots, at which point you could LOD back everything else.
Perhaps the only reason we aren’t seeing it at the moment is that it’s not worth the investment to put it in games at the moment while only one platform would see the benefit. When the new Playstation and Xbox are around maybe it’ll change.
I just realized that this bald guy seems to be the same model and he also says the same ‘parfait’ stuff at the end of the Nvidia video.
Yes, the assets are the same in both demos. Nvidia and Activision are using data from USC.
They are both bald because hair is a pain in the ass.
At first I was mind blown …
Then I realized it would just serve another Call of Duty episode.
Yes, activision has plans of bringing this into the next CoD although current generation consoles wouldn’t be able to render all the geometry and detail.
I agree with the top comment.
What is the obsession with realism? you know it gets to that stage where you make something so realistic, its just creepy. Id like to see more stylized games coming out. Rather than everything looking like Crisis or Halo. Maybe its just not my cuppa-tea.
Why is activision basically taking nvidia’s demo and posting it as their own?
I was thinking the same thing until I noticed NVIDIA is using USC ICT’s data - which means Activision probably did the same thing using USC ICT’s data.
Because ‘stylized’ games don’t push technology boundaries. Realism is the holy grail for engine developers.
It does seem to be the case.

It had been compressed to work for Nvidia on the Titan, is activision bragging that they compressed the existing system more so it can run on older hardware?
Seems like it, since Nvidia had to use a titan ($1000+ card) while Activision is using a 680 ($400-600 card) at 120 FPS.
