Looking for some opinions. I have a 12 hour round trip flight coming up and I’m trying to figure out what game to play. Everything that can be emulated (all gens up to say psx/dreamcast) are up for grabs.
I have a list that includes a bunch of jrpgs, zelda, star fox, but I’m looking for something I maybe haven’t played before.
I love playing any Advance Wars or Picross on a DS when I’m on a plane. The game session can last anywhere from minutes to hours. I tried playing XCOM on my phone once, and it just doesn’t seem worth it. On a plane, the low bass sounds get drowned out by the engines if you don’t have good headphones on, and the loading screens aren’t of the same “cadence” as food/beverage servings/cleanups, bathroom breaks, and other passenger interruptions.
I dunno if there is a game I can play straight for 12 hours. I would take a selection. Civ 4, KSP, dark souls, creeper world, a couple of movies and several seasons of TV. I’d make sure Unity was installed. And perhaps unreal if I felt adventurous. A fully charged kindle. And a list of conversation starters to pester the person next to me.
In reality I’d have two kids on the plane with me, so I wouldn’t get that much gaming done.
Assuming there was wifi access (you can tell I do not take planes or even vacations much for that matter) it would be Diablo 3. The only “modern” AAA game I greatly enjoy playing. Been getting back into it a lot the past few weeks. In fact, haven’t done any game dev to speak of. On the other hand my monk is not too far from Paragon Level 400 and about 2 million damage per second. Loads of fun the grind is.
I played Persona 4: Golden on the plane flight back from PAX South, and had a great time. From what I’ve played of the game since then, it’s quite clear to me that it would be appropriate for a longer plane flight as well. (it looks like its going to last me quite some time)
How about Jagged Alliance 2? It’s turn based, doesn’t neccessarily need sound, runs on old hardware, can keep you busy for days and has complexity and replayability. If you want a different experience try the community mod.
Plane WiFi IMHO is still too expensive for recreation, but obviously reasonable if you’re conducting business. If anything, purchase WiFi for the last hour of the flight if you really need it, so that you can familiarize yourself with your destination, connections, logistics with anyone receiving you, etc.
Is everyone on this thread really comfortable with busting out a laptop on a plane? I find that the frequent lifting/lowering of the tray for any of the various reasons impedes any real productivity or immersion. I usually even have difficulty with a tablet. Hence the handheld DS or smart phone.
If anyone is traveling with 2-4 other people, I highly recommend Clubhouse Games run over local server-client config.
I don’t have any particular problem with it, but I see your point. Having a full laptop out while you’re in coach or general seating could be a bit crowded and inconvenient. It’s more of a 1st-class occupation, where you might have more elbow room. These days for plane flights I always pack some portable gaming systems. (as well as some headphones) My Vita has gotten quite a bit of play. When I pull out my 3DS on a plane flight I always seem to reach for Crosswords. I have plenty of other games on my 3DS, but Crosswords is just comfortable in the context of a plane flight. I’m not sure why.
