What happend to OpenXR?

For the last years of developing VR games I have been eagerly waiting for the implementation of OpenXR as it promised to unify and simplify VR development immensely.
Now version 1.0 has been released and Unity as well as Oculus, Valve etc. are still on the support list.

And then Unity suddenly completely revamps its XR plugin system and the Blog post does not even mention OpeXR at all?

I am confused.

Is the new XRI API Unitys implementation of the OpenXR specification, does it have to be revamped again if OpenXR will finally be integrated or has Unity just dropped OpenXR?

Am I really the only one curious about OpenXR? (Bacause it wasn’t even mentioned in the comments)
