What info to provide to hire a programmer?

Hi guys,

I am a freelance artist, but I would like to hire a coder at some point - I just don’t know much about coding, or how to explain in an ad what I need. Does anyone have a good example of an ad for a coder, or could a freelance coder tell me what they need to see?

Theirs few details you must provide in order to someone give you a good/accurate advice.

  • First off, why would you need a programmer?
  • Are you making a game? (Talk about your project).
  • Do you have some design/concepts docs to show?
  • Do you have good art skills?
  • Do you have money to pay (this isn’t always necessary but could help).

From that list, if you have good art skills, you’ll provably get in someones (already) team. It’ll be easier.
Cheers,

In terms technical skills, a programmer must be

  • a problem solver
  • if will use unity, a programmer should be proficient in any of programming languages such as in C#, javascript and boo. C/C++ would be additional
  • must know object oriented programming
  • 3d math

I’m curious— who is more common among Unity Developers?

Graphics Artists

or

Programmers

Or are they about equal? I notice both are required to make games… but wondering which there is more of, and if there is a big enough difference in “population” of each to warrant one being always desired.

ask for sample demo and what he did as programmer for these demo , this is a good start so you can see what he may be able to do and feature he is able to implement.
programmer are not superman ( few are maybe )… i think so they may have weak point or things they didn’t do enough time to be comfortable with it at first, so you better give a good view of some specificity you may want in your game, like multiplayer / network stuff, heavy AI etc…

I don’t think you need to care what language within unity he is going to use as long he get what you need done , should not be your business unless you have a good reason to force one language over another.

then from my experience , try to have at least a solid guideline to provide , having a super mega details game design at first may not be a necessity , but you should get your idea for you project somewhat clear and structured , nothing worse than doing design / production in same time ^^, more the programmer get a big and clear picture more that will be easy to dress is plan of attack for the rest of the project.

Anyway all that depends on the kind of project you target
