What is articy:draft?

A question and a few questions to follow: What is articy:draft and how does it help design games? How will it help when using Unity?

Ew, bad sign, 1st 3 results from google were to the website of the company that makes articy:draft

If you googled for it, read the product page, saw the videos they have posted on Steam, and you still don’t know what it does, then you probably don’t need it yet.

It’s some sort of planning software. I tried the trial version and I wasn’t impressed. Seems like it’d be good for planning RPG/adventure style games though

What I need to know is if it will actually provide any coding for engines like unity and speed things up in terms of cutscenes and other parts of stories. According to what I’ve seen it does not provide any help because if anyone wants to write a story for a game you can simply use NotePad.

It is a ultra expensive notepad.

Well that’s not a bad idea but my point is that a program like articy:draft does not seem really necessary to make a good game quickly.

Yes, it is not necessary. Even on giant companies most likely designers will use M$ Word and Excel.

I however use a tool I built 2 years ago for game design right inside Unity. It was my first free submition to Asset Store, but it has too many buttons and UT required me to document EVERYTHING and I have no time for that so gave up on publishing it and keep it for myself only.

Here is my solution if somebody plan to buy AD.

When I first heard of Articy Draft, I was pretty excited. But from what I’ve read, it’s overpriced and under-featured. Which is pretty sad.

I still haven’t found a good solution for planning my big game, but for now I’m just using Google Docs.

Alright, a review from someone who actually uses it:

I spent quite a few months reviewing the program before deciding to buy it. My deciding factor is they put it on steam, at a discounted price, I think their pricing model is a bit silly, and its a common complaint about the program.

The unique way they split up elements into the program really speeds up your ability to organize information and quickly build up not only your dialogues, but also your scenes. You can quickly document characters, and background information and the program will organize and keep track of that for you. It also can document everything else you might want in your game, maps, items, etc.

The dialogue system is robust, and it allows you to enter multiple choices, and it does some basic math for you on the fly as well. It keeps tracks of characters deaths, changes in those choices for you, and allows you to make dry runs of your dialogue to ensure your getting exactly what you thought you wrote.

I found that for me, this has become an essential tool in creating and tracking all the information I am trying to put together for my game project.

If you’re creating a game with lots of content, Articy is really good at organizing that stuff. I’m making an RPG and have found it great for creating item and enemy databases and diagramming AI state machines. It’s quicker to use it than to roll your own database imho and the data can be exported to XML for direct import into your game which is cool. For games that are not so dialog or item heavy, it’s probably a waste of time.

i use for game design, it’s very usefull because it allow to quickly acces to any document you’ll need to create your game.

and it is very usefull because you will have to share your docs with team members so they will fully understand what you espect and wich is needed for the next step without having to ask you.
very usefull too because you can see and change anything before the game creation start.

articy:draft is the first professional tool for game design in commercial studios. articy:draft helps to create, organize and communicate the game vision while being tightly integrated into your pipeline. The main benefit of it is, it access really faster so you can do work faster.
So I can say it is really useful for Game Designing.
