Has anybody else noticed lately the constant “Flaming” and “Trolling”, Its starting to become a pain especially when your just roaming around to see what everyone is doing, I’m not going to say and names in-particular but I am sure they will comment on this thread and make there selves known.
I just think its about time it stopped, Or moderators take notice and take action. A few weeks ago it was a nice relaxed forum and personally I don’t know if I want to make the next thread just because of the pure pointless hate going around.
Anyone have any ideas on what we could do. And if I am the only one who has noticed then by all means discard this thread.
Well, to be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t say anyone is “trolling”, that might not be thee best word considering I don’t think that anyone on here is posting with the specific intention to annoy other users, or at least not most other users. I do agree with you that flaming and arguments are becoming increasingly common and some people seem to almost be trying to purposely perpetrate said flaming and arguments, but I don’t really think there is anything anyone can do about it. Sure, you can warn people for being inflammatory but to be honest I find nothing innately wrong with being a little inflammatory, I think the forum posters should have the freedom to be like that if they want to. Not to mention, even if the moderators did crack down on this, there are way too many grey areas between what is “acceptable” and what is inflammatory, and I think either this moderation would be infective or people with innocent intentions would get warned due to the moderation being too harsh; I think it would be hard if not near impossible to moderate things toward a perfect balance, and like I stated earlier I would probably dislike this new balance.
I’ve been to many forums and the ones that ultimately fail or have their members angry and dissatisfied at the forum itself are forums that are too heavily moderated. I think that unless things are going past a certain line, the moderators shouldn’t be involved at all. I agree with you that this new phenomenon is irritating, but I don’t really see a viable way to fix it. It’s the internet, the more inflammatory people were bound to find this website eventually. Of course, without the free version there probably wouldn’t be this many inflammatory users but making Unity free has done far more good than bad.
Yeah, All good and valid points, And I couldn’t find the right word for trolling so I put it in “”.
It seems to be the same people over and over again causing arguments which makes me think… Why post? If I post, I know this guy/girl is going to moan at me for some reason.
I’m sorry if ive put the thread across in that way, Im just concerned that is all, I was just wanting peoples opinions on the topic and maybe to let people know its starting to have an effect.
Once again, sorry if you feel that way about this thread
Don’t be sorry Charlie, I think it’s right to mention things like this. Often people on a forum and the culture of a forum change overtime without people noticing and when it starts to change for the worse I’m sure almost all people don’t actually want it to happen they just simply don’t notice that it is. Simply mentioning it in a thread like this is often enough to stop it because it make others aware of their own actions and makes them think twice before replying to others.
Another good way to combat it is if you think someone is trolling then simply ignore their post. It’s when the OP gets offended or tries to defend themselves but poking holes in the posts of people who are just generally disagreeable that arguments happen.
I like this forum, on the whole a nice collaborative atmosphere.
Thank you Ant.
Its exactly how I feel, It would just be a shame to loose the Forum for the worse over petty arguments and “Trolling” I do enjoy the majority of the people on here and have met some great people who I am proud to have worked with.
Also you know there’s always the ignore user-feature.
Apart from that, just don’t reply to every single post and feel offended by it. This is just adding up to the problem. You defend your buddies, your co-workers and respond to almost every single little mock someone makes.
Just go on, ignore the useless postings and start to concentrate on the important stuff - your work.
You’re just getting sidetracked by replying to each and everything in here. Pick the goodies, not the sour ones
ive already become sidetracked by a lot of lame users on this forum, and i NEVER lose focus, why am I trying to help misguided ppl anyway, is beyond me.
Your right acumen… I just feel the need to respond, Im not a person to let things by me, I rather confront the problem and try reason with it, If all else fails then I just ignore them.
It is just sad to see all the threads filled with certain people
And Blue, I’m on the same page as you. haha, Sometimes I don’t know why I do!
Edit: Holy moly, Just looked at Acumen portfolio, Some amazing stuff there!
Gotta choke that desire, that’s all.
I often type looooong answers, just to hit the cancel button, thinking “Oh, these people won’t learn anyways - why do I even try”.
These soft skills might help us in the real world but in here, we just gotta learn that some people just want to cause trouble and even enjoy it - think joker in batman - yes it’s sad, but there’e nothing we can do but just ignore them and instead help and give constructive crits to the people that actually care. Slowly but steady the other people will get sidetracked too and don’t care anymore. The same way these guys become so prominent in here by giving them attention - we can just get rid of them by ignoring them, or not fall for their cheap tricks
Think about it like that. Why should we lose soo much energy in giving these guys attention when we could praise great work, art and dedication of other parties in here. How often do threads die with no or very few replies, yet all these weird threads turning up in the last weeks, get many pages and pages of replies. Let’s focus on the good guys and get better at what we’re doing and don’t focus on this offtopic gossip stuff
It’s gonna be Legen______wait for it_____dary !
Mostly the fact that it gave Unity Technologies a butt-load of new users, thus more exposure, thus more users converting to Unity Pro, thus more corporations noticing Unity and considering it as a viable option. The switch to Unity free has been very helpful for Unity Technologies I imagine, I mean throughout the past year they have gained an enormous amount of employees due to the boost. Perhaps this switch was not as beneficial to the user-base and the community; I know I was angry when I heard about the switch because I actually shelled out the money for Unity Indie when it costed money and didn’t have the money to buy Unity Pro, even at a discount.
I think moderators taking posts down faster would help a lot - some users like you said seem to live on causing arguments. Best thing to do is to ignore them. Cut the problem when it’s young.
Personally I agree with most everything in this forum. By the way I don’t know if anyone else has noticed but most of the trolling/flaming has stopped. Or I have not seen any all day, and I noticed some forums have bin deleted. So it looks like we can all put this behind us and just ignore the next troll that comes around.
Wow - this is the awesomest idea I’ve heard to solve the forum issues. Give everyone read access but write access is only gained via a subscription. The subscription could be really low (like, maybe just $1 per month or maybe $3 per month to avoid the micro-transaction-trap) but it would prevent (most) idiots that obviously just come here to cause trouble from coming.
If the subscription is low enough, I doubt it would prevent anyone from joining in. Heck, I wouldn’t mind if it’s just $10 for a year. But just something that would make it less “fun” for idiots to just join to be a pest.
I’m pretty sure that a minor fee would increase the usefulness of the forums much more than any other thing I could think of. Of course, some people will screem “greedy bastards” … but let them … any sane person understands that a low fee has nothing to do with greed
The ignore user feature’s cool, too, though. However, it doesn’t help much with new users flooding the forums.
