What is it like working as a developer?

Hello!

Im studying to become a .NET-developer at “Norrlands Yrkeshögskola” in Umeå, Sweden and currently in a project management course.

As a part of that course, we are trying to get a better understanding of what its like to work as a .NET developer, and for those of you that have worked as a .NET-developer, feel free to fill in this form that we have created.

And for those of you that havent, what is it like working as a developer in general?

Things to discuss:

What is a regular workday like for you? ex. when do you arrive at the office. etc.
How did you get to where you are today? ex. Academic background, qualifications, previous jobs.
Do you have any advice for someone who is new in the field?
What expectations did you have going into your first job, and how do you reflect upon that?
How many cups of coffee do you drink per day?

I have been a hobbyist programmer since a couple of years ago, done almost all of my programming in Unity and that is basically why Im posting this here.

I do .Net as well, but to answer your questions in order:
7:30 am - 4:00 pm
B.S. in CEG, Internship → Full Time Salaried

Negotiate your starting salary…I cannot stress this enough. For your first job, negotiate your pay. I didn’t, because I really wanted/needed the job…but I could have negotiated a higher pay and still have gotten it. Which would have helped in certain endeavors, i.e. buying a house -.-

I interned there first, then went part-time and then full time while finishing school, so no real expectations originally.

Started at 4-6 cups, down to 2 :slight_smile:

Thank you to those of you have have taken time to fill in the form so far!

We are also doing phone interviews with people in the business, and we have gotten a lot of interesting responses so far.

A lot of people says that it is crucial to have a morning break between 9-10 to get things going, while some are talking about bugfixing - that they need that fix that thing that have been in their head all weekend.
