What is the basis of measurement for mass in the wheel...

…colliders?

Is the wheel center half the diameter of the wheel as measured from the ground? Is it where the center of the wheel is when measuring down from the center mass of the chassis? Is the wheel itself the object whose object space is used or is it the car as a whole?

What units is mass measured in? Is it Kg’s, pounds or some made up value? Is there a real world correlation here?

What is the unit of measure for wheel radius? Inches, meters, feet?

What is the unit of measure for suspension distance? Meters, feet, inches?

How do the springs interact with the chassis?

Is target position the position of the suspension if the car is at a complete stop and in park?

Does a setting of 1 equate to 100% of the distance in the target position settings meaning fully bottomed out with 0 meaning 0% or no compression of the suspension at all meaning it is fully extended? Does a value of .50 mean the wheel is sitting at a position which is exactly 50% of the overall suspension travel distance?

Any help as to my understanding of this is appreciated.

Does no one know the answers? Not even the creators of Unity?

Well, I know that mass is only relative to other objects. An object on its own will behave the same whether it has a mass of 1000 or a mass of 1. It’s only when it hits other objects that it matters. So you just have to make sure objects’ relative masses are correct, but they don’t have any inherent measurement.

I haven’t worked with wheel colliders, but I assume the unit measurements are the same as all others in Unity (i.e., they are what you say they are).

wheel colliders just don’t seem to work in my experience, and it relates to this aspect. you can’t get the suspension to behave realistically like yoggy’s raycast setup - which i think is why alot of people use his : )

I haven’t had a chance to look at it. Is it raycasts only in his or a combination?

Wheel colliders worked fine for me—see Off Roadin’ on my blog. You just need to set the friction extremely low.

Also, see this thread.

@omar

raycasts only.

my main issue is with the suspension - i’m curious what is the mass of your vehicle in the off-roadin example? your’s does feel much more realistic than say the unity race car example.

i also saw the script you posted a bit ago to but hadn’t had the time to test it out - but that was using raycasts wasn’t it?
