I feel good with my programming knowledge and i feel the main thing holding me back from being able to make a good game is that i have no idea how to make items, models…
So what is the essayist software i can use that will help me get started? Money is no issue. I have looked at Blender, but its really complicated and people say they have issues with it and Unity working together correctly.
Modo’s good value for money in the sense that it does everything. I’ve just switched to it but to be honest it’s pretty quirky and not very intuitive.
Cinema 4D is another good all rounder to consider. Generally I’d advise going for one program that does everything you need, as opposed to using one for modelling, another for animating etc. But it’s a real personal choice.
Softimage for me would be the best of the bunch. Just look at the interface, no symbols, everything’s clear and simple. Neutral grey by design so it doesn’t color your judgment. TechnologyGuide - TechTarget
A real solid artists tool that isn’t hard to use. Downside is it doesn’t do sculpting, it costs $3000 and it’s owned by Autodesk.
3ds max has a good solid set of modeling tools and a huge collection of learning material since it’s been around forever. Also, widely used by professional artists in the games industry.
Blender has a pretty tidy UI and an intuitive workflow. It works very well in Unity, I’m using it in a larger project with hundreds of models and complex animations and I went through every release from Blender 2.57 to Blender 2.69 without a hitch.
That being said, all full-featured modeling and animation toolkits are complicated. The big difference, imho, is that people buying 3ds Max or Maya are usually professionals that don’t normally moan on public forums when they end up having to buy video training or spend hours reading the documentation, whereas any clueless newb can download Blender and then get frustrated after finding out it’s rather more difficult than MS Paint
Big studios are mostly using Maya these days, so if, as you said, money isn’t an issue and/or you’ve got plans for joining the industry, you might be better off learning that instead.
Maya has some of the best modeling and animation tools - Andy they have a $50 month maya lt product that integrates with unity…
Modo is great for modeling - I haven’t had as much success with skeletal animation using it with unity
Some of the best animation (and simulation) tools… yes. Some of the best modeling tools… hell no.
Maya has more like the worst modeling tools, compared to Max, Modo, XSI, or Blender.
I am sure everyone will answer differently. I tend to use Blender, but mainly because I am used to it. There is a learning curve for Blender but it does have an FBX exporter…
For trees, plants and rocks I use Forester Pro and Medusa Pro, these produce randomized model trees, plants and rocks respectively that import straight into Unity. But I am highly biased…they are my own products. But check them out, there are free versions for both, and who doesn’t like free models. Unity of course has a tree generator…which I find rather fiddly.
Personally, when developing applications I use my model generators for trees and rocks, buy other complex models from the asset store, and then only attempt simpler models myself.
