What is the most time and energy efficient way to make Pixel Art?

I come from a non-game industry and been working for more than 10 years now. Game has always been part of my life and finally decided to work on one. My team is working on a 2D pixel art top-down RPG game using Unity. One thing I noticed is that graphics, especially the animations take up so much effort and time. When I see games that come out now, they are so polished and just so many elements to them. I can tell their work has been streamlined well and there’s got to be a better way of doing things than how we do it.

Could you guys please teach me some software, tips, etc. how you guys work efficiently with Pixel art?

Fast and well do not get along.

It takes me ages to draw my characters and they don’t look good either, but, at least it’s me who made them.

If you are in a hurry, you can find 2D art to buy everywhere on the web.

I am not in a hurry. Currently working with a graphic artist. I was just wondering if there are some nice tricks that can be done. I am not graphical person so pardon me if this sounds stupid but, at least for the non-animated parts, like environments, couldn’t you put some images together in Photoshop, apply filters to make it look pixelated, and chop up to tiles? as we are using tile based maps. Like tips like that you guys found useful over the years would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve tried and failed experiments just like what you’re describing. There isn’t much in way of shortcuts for creating ‘good’ pixel art.

However, from my experience, learning to use Aseprite is definitely better if you’re going to be drawing animations. Aseprite has the ability to take your layers and put them into a sprite sheet for you, as well as a lot of handy tricks for drawing straight diagonal pixel lines and such.
