Another thread asked about what dev rig to get, but I think it would be interesting to see what dev rig you already have. In other words, here you can list your awesome rig that will make us neckbeards cry with envy. Or maybe get advice to optimise yours.
For myself, it’s:
Midi Tower box with i5 Haswell, 4 cores, at 3.2 GHz
16GB 1600Mhz DDR3
NVidia GTX 750 Ti 2 GB DDR5 RAM - Maxwell based GPU
BenQ 24’’ GL2460HM LED HDMI
2 TB SATA 7200 rpm HD
Logitech Performance Mouse MX
Logitech G105 Gaming Keyboard
Wacom Medium tablet, the low end one - not the pro or extra pro version
I have a VM for Debian on which I develop web-stuff, but my game dev is done on Windows 8. What I find myself doing, more and more, is to focus on the graphics side. I think I’m turning into an art type. It’s what interests me now, and I’m not that diligent with keeping up with my C# knowledge.
Any suggestions for this setup? I’m using Unity Free.
AMD Phenom II x4 at some amount of GHz
Asus M4N I forget what motherboard
8GB DDR3
EVGA GTX 460 SE
Vizio 32"
I-INC 25"
EVGA GTX 9800
Samsung 19"
Logitech G510
Logitech G500
Wacom Intuos 4 Medium
An assortment of hard drives and a SSD of some sort for my OS and main programs
Bitfenix Shinobi Case
Windows 8
Unity Free
My current dev rig has the following hardware specs:
Intel i7-4770K CPU
256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD Drive
Asus Maximus VI Hero motherboard
Cooler Master HAF XB EVO case
Antec HCG M HCG-850M 850W power supply
32GB RAM (DDR3 2133)
GTX780 with custom cooler (I did not like the stock triple 92mm fan unit, so I designed and 3D printed a dual 120mm fan mount for it.)
Windows 7 Pro
I did have a CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i water cooler on the CPU, but I removed it because I could hear the water pump running. When I code, I prefer it dead silent in the room. I currently have a Noctua NH-U14S (140mm air cooler) installed on the CPU, and I really like that.
MSI GE40 Notebook (I7 4th Gen 4702MQ, Nvidia GTX760M, 750GB HDD + 128 GB SSD, 14" Display, less than 1" think) [I’m traveling, kicks my desktops ass…, and the devil eyes are cool]
AMD X4 750K processor
Biostar FM2+ MicroATX motherboard
8GB DDR3 ram
Nvidia GTX 750Ti gpu
Two HDDs (one 5400rpm for backup, the main one is 7200rpm… next upgrade will be an SSD for the Windows + application installs)
An old Rosewill case that I’ve had for like 10 years and has had more parts in it than a cheap hooker
Lepa 400W psu
Logitech M705 marathon mouse
Some random cheap PS/2 keyboard that I love to death, maybe one day I’ll switch to mechanical but for now this one is just fine
Dual 19" Acer monitors
Recently updated to Win 8.1 so I can look into Windows Phone 8 development, still apprehensive on whether it was a good move… I miss Win7.
It’s all budget stuff but it handles everything I throw at it for development stuff, plus gaming from time to time.
I just wish I had a better GPU, but I can’t motivate buying one right now. I’ve already spent far too much on ZBrush. Luckily ZBrush doesn’t use the GPU at all, so it doesn’t matter what I have - unless it’s really awful. ZBrush needs CPU and ram, not GPU.
AMD 6350 Hexcore OC’d to 4.4ghz.
Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 AM3+ motherboard
Rosewell Gold Edition 950w PSU(overkill I know, I want to run SLI soon)
GTX 660 Ti OC
Cooler Master Elite 430 Case
Handful of SSDs and HDDs
i7 950, saying these things have 8 cores is cheating, 4 cores with super duper threading technology. Will overclock to a billion mhz when water cooling looks less of a pain
10gb ram
580gtx 3gb (for my uses the 6 and 700 series are disappointing below their top models)
HTC One, and when I can get it off her, Samsung Galaxy S3
Oculus Rift
Wacom Intuos
Fridge stacked with meals that microwave quickly
Cat to hate
I’m running at 39/40 Celsius right now just browsing the internet. My old 8150 would be running 28/29 doing something that simple My cooler manages to keep it under 60 under full load though so its manageable.
I have a few different machines that I work on based on what I want to do but the one thing I would recommend is don’t stop at 1 or 2 monitors.
!! More Monitors !!
You can never have enough monitors especially with Unity. Every tab can be put on it’s own monitor if you want. I run 3 on my desktop right now and wish I had a few more sometimes (kids broke 2 of them recently, got to love em).
Game View on one screen, scene view/inspector on another, Code up on a third then various other things spread around like IRC, Web, and well need more monitors.
