Also the Asset Store for me. Well, also, more like, the abundance of fantastic extensions, editor plugins, shaders, etc. that really accelerate the dev process. Before I really knew about the asset store, I just assumed it was a bunch of art assets that you can plop into your game. It very well could have been just that when I was first noticing Unity, but when I realized they had full-on core systems and kits available, I got fully on board. For reasonable prices, it saves me tons of hours of work. I sound like a commercial. Lol. But seriously, if you think “some of these $50-100 assets aren’t worth it, I’ll just build the system myself”, count how many hours you spend building that system, compare it to the off-the-shelf solution, multiply that many hours by your hourly rate at your day job, and compare it to the asset store price. It’s almost always a no-brainer after you do the math.
Kind of everything.
The community is great because it often inspires you, even when you’re here to actually help someone out.
I like to read and scroll through the forums, learned a lot here.
Meanwhile, the engine itself is so familiar to me that I cannot imagine to switch to another. I like the general idea and everything seems understandable.
Fun fact though, the professors and game-dev supporting members of our university tend to tell new students to use the Unreal Engine and they appear to be quite successful, even though they do not actually give proper reasons. It’s a little disappointing.
