I’m a graphic designer working on a huge scene and my 2010 i5 iMac has not sufficient performance to handle that. I’m about to buy a better machine, considering a Mac Pro with dual GPU (Fire Pro 500) and multiple CPU cores. The question is, if that’s not a waste of power like in many of Adobe apps, which, as I got informed, can’t get the most of the MP’s power potential, because they are not ready to utilize multithreading. Talking about Unity editor performance - would you recommend rather more CPU cores, higher CPU frequency, bigger RAM or better GPU? I’m not familiar with these technical aspects. For other reasons, it must be a mac, not a PC.
Thanks for any suggestions
Im not sure how ‘huge’ your scene is but I work off a 2013 late model macbook pro, 2.3 ghz i7, 16 gig ram, 2gig video and 512gb sad, and Unity3d seems to keep up just fine to my work load, I also run 2-3 windows 8.1 virtual machines using Parallels with different versions of unity, visual studio and modelling software on each of them and I’ve yet to really max out my machine, keep in mind my fan’s do kick on every so often when im rendering my models but all in all im very happy.
I use this machine for most of my development and coding work, and when I need windows I just flip open a VM and away I go. Im not sure if this would work for you or not, but I’ve been able to connect 3 monitors to my macbook and use it as a replacement for my main desktop. That’s my 2.cents hopefully it helps.
