It Depends…
It depends on how much money you can afford to spend and on what type of game you are wanting to develop.

It could be argued that a top of the line Mac Pro is needed for Unity game development. There are also valid arguments that developing a game on a slower machine is worth while; like a Mac Mini or Macbook.

The advantages of developing on a top of the line Mac Pro are fairly obvious. The advantages of working on a slower Mac (mini or Macbook) are that you are forced to consider performance during the entire design and development phase. If you are developing a casual game, this can be helpful.

Personally I use a MacBook and love it. It is the 2.0Ghz model with the 950GMA graphics chipset. It does about everything I want it to. It cost me $850.

I have to use a notebook (for my day job), but if I did all my development at home I would probably be using an iMac. I really like the 24" models. They start at $1800.

Really you can use any Mac to do Unity development, just decide how much you want to spend and go for it.

(…one more thing. If you plan on doing a lot of 3D modeling and rendering you would want to avoid the Mini and MacBooks and go with a mac that has a ‘real’ 3D graphics card; ie. iMac or Pro.)

For unity you need a intel mac with 2 gHz, 1 gb of RAM and more than 128
mb graphics… You need a fast computer :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a 15" Santa Rosa MacBook Pro, 2.4ghz 4gb of RAM, and the nVidia 8600M 256 card and it can run, Unity3D, Maya, and Photoshop at the same time with no hitches in performance.

If you want to do game development on a laptop, the MacBook Pro’s are very equivalent to the iMac’s in terms of power and performance. The Mac Pro’s are the top end but I personally think they are kind of overkill.

I started using Unity on an 1GHz G4 dual processor Power Mac with 1.5GB of RAM (this was a highish end 2002 model), it ran just fine. It also ran just fine on my old 1.2GHz G4 iBook with 1.25 GB of RAM.

I’d recommend getting the fastest Mac in your budget, but ANY current or recent Mac model (with a decent amount of RAM) will let you develop games with Unity and run content creation software with no serious problems. Modern computers are wonderfully overpowered

One nice thing about Apple vs. Dell (say) is that Apple’s product line is straight forward. With Dell configuration is far more important than picking the right box. A typical PC user will end up paying twice as much for a given amount of performance as someone who knows what they’re doing simply by picking the wrong base model. With Apple it’s simple – this model is just like that model but with a bigger screen.

Never buy/upgrade RAM or hard disks or monitors from Apple. That’s simply Apple’s way of taking money away from people who have too much of it.
