Like the title says, what do you think makes a FPS actual feel like one?
I play alot of FPS and they feel fun, and yet when developing I can’t figure out what I should do next.
(if you want to try it that topic is: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/149667-WIP-Weekly-Updates-Alien-FPS)
I feel like controls are what usually make a FPS feel like one, Get them wrong and things can get wonky.
I think it requires a first person view, and i’m not quite sure but it might need shooting?
Rocket Launchers.
Maybe, maybe…
Fast paced.
Who really wants to walk around at a really slow speed? Add sprinting, gives players more a feel of, fastness.
Also applies to combat, nobody really wants to stand infront of another player both shooting each other and taking overly long to die.
Slow pace for me is just as important.
I’d personally rather stalk another player and follow them slowly - calculating when to off them, Rather than drop off a roof in front of someone and shoot them once in the face.
Going from that - i think the biggest part of making a FPS feel like a FPS is by letting players control the pace of the game.
The key to making a FPS feel like a FPS is to have a 12 year old kid tell you that you are homosexual and your mother has promiscuous relations while you play. It’s important that he has a squeaky high pitched vice like a chipmunk also.
They must also continuously play music/talk to others with the mic on full.
Was that comment really necessary or helpful to this thread? If you don’t have anything of value to say don’t say/write anything at all. That goes for everyone here.
@Seven said everything: “Going from that - i think the biggest part of making a FPS feel like a FPS is by letting players control the pace of the game.”
But being a little bit more especific, something I consider to be an interesting element in First Person Shooters are real time events. Stuff that make you feel like you’re in a movie, things like what happens in Uncharted 2 3 for example (yes, I am aware that those are not FPS, but still).
lol. in game rage is the best.
What makes an fps an fps? The view. nothing more. The rest is just details.
I agree with James. FPS just means “First Person Shooter” and that’s all an FPS needs to be. The rest is just context. What’s important in an FPS is a different matter. As stated by Seven, it’s important for the player to have some control over the pace, though you may want to intervene a little and make sure the gameplay flows at a steady pace.
For FPS games the best control scheme for me is WASD movement, E as interaction, Space as jump, Shift as run, and mouse as look. Arrow keys can be weapon select, but that doesn’t always work well. Not all FPS games need real guns, even. My favorite first person shooters are the Portal games, which are played with just one gun, and that isn’t even a weapon. The content and environment of the game is also very important. Keep a consistent feel, or make the feel of the game change smoothly. Don’t just jump from dark and spooky to bright and happy if it will break the immersion. There are a lot of small pieces in the environment that give the game a certain feel. Play through some first person shooters while looking for all the small details the developers added in.
What makes a FPS feel Like one? What genre says it is “First Person Shooter” to qualify as a FPS it must have.
- First person camera
- Shooting
Now if your game has elements of that genre than you would have to categorize it appropriately. For example Gears of War is a third person Shooter it has the shooter element but not the First person camera instead it has a third person camera so it would be called TPS.
What makes a good FPS (any shooter, really) is immersion. Most people think immersion means uber-realism and avoiding HUDs like the plague, and that’s not what I mean. Real immersion is just when you’re not thinking about anything but the game.
When you begin playing the game during the day and when you finally turn it off you realise its now dark… and six years have passed.
