I am making a first person shooter atm, and was thinking of what would make a first person shooter stand out from the popular ones like Cod and BF. In my opinion i think that making a first person shoot that is nothing like BF or Cod could make it stand out. And not having it compared to those games. Wether it be making the game non realistic at all or grpahics being so much different then the games that come out now are like. Most games that come out now try to make the game look as real as possible, and spend too much time making the game look good that the actual gameplay is very bad. Take Minecraft for example, it is a very popular game and the reason i like it is that the graphics are not what you would expect in the popular games today like WoW Cod BF and so on. I would like some opinions of what you think would make a first person shooter stand out from the other popular ones
I would say something like the Borderlands series, combining other genres like RPG into a FPS. For my game for example I’ll probably use skill
trees.
Uhhh we have so many if these threads.
What makes it stand out?
Uniqueness.
What else makes it stand out?
Good advertising.
But really what is the no 1 thing that makes it stand out?
Actual unbuggy gameplay.
Hmm a rocket launcher that shoots exploding kittens as controversy sells games look at the postal series lol
Actually good game play for a fps is most important if it does not play well it does not matter how good it looks or the how well written the plot is or how unique any part of the game is no one will want to keep playing if the game play is not good or fun and by game play i mean how the game feels to play from the movement to the camera to how you interact with anything in the game that includes shooting if it is a shooter.
Nothing makes FPSs standout. They are FPSs…
Look at Crysis’ ‘new’ multiplayer. All the fcking same shit of any other FPS but with good graphics.
Amen.
What you actually need to sell FPS is same old crap. And allot of sheep…
The “new” Multiplayer is not same of any other FPS. It is the SAME OF THE LAST game.
I think my answer to thread question is: innovation make something new and good
You could set it either in the distance past or distant future, or on some alien organic world.
I say depends! I think good gameplay is key, because you don’t want to stand out like DaiKatana!! I would also say, make a standard well made FPS, then add a gameplay feature that interests you, not a gimmick!!! What’s the difference? A gameplay feature is something you need to use to beat the game, like bullet time in Max Payne, a gimmick is something you don’t need to beat the game, like bullet time in every game but Max Payne.
IMO, if you have to ask this question, then you don’t need to be making an FPS. For example, almost all the games I program on my free time are FPSs and what makes them great? One is a sniper game where you have to lead a small SEAL team through enemy territory, another is a FP, tower defense shooter. I think they’re all awesome. Think of something that make you think the game is great, and others will follow…or die!!! lol
Story. If you have a good story, you’ve beat half the FPS out on the market. Nobody plays COD for it’s story. Story’s what you should do.
EDIT: Also, if you plan on staying in these forums long, your username may not fit.
DeusEX for multiply points of entry, hacking, arsenal of gadgets, player stats abilities, and other things like espionage, assassinations, exploration. The Splintercell series shares some of these characteristics as well.
So in no way is this genre being exhausted of any new ideas
Deus Ex was a first person game with guns but not a first person shooter.
totally agree.
Would you be kind enough to mention why that is ?
If a first person shooter is just Run&Gun then DeusEx is not just that type.
If its just the camera angle then then we can also dismiss Dead Space.
I think they say that because Deus Ex gave you the option to NOT shoot people, unlike most FPSs. I wish I could have played the game, I didn’t get a chance to along time ago, and now it’s just too old for me. I prefer the gaming conventions of today: easy swapping, sprinting, and parkour(which I wish more games had. It pisses me off that more games don’t have it.)
Add parkour PLEASE!!! I can’t stand most FPSs being so… dumb in movement. In most Military shooters, you can’t jump over things, hop on top of things, or run away properly… even though military people have a shit load of training that allows them to run for long distances.
Okay that makes good sense “option not to shoot”, classifying it as not a general shooter, ![]()
Might i also add that my preference is not for FPS games on rails though there are exceptions
DeusEx Human Evolution is more recent of the series if you want to play a current version
