What modeling software do you use?

Hi all!

I’m using maya for over 3 years now ,for all my modeling work, and mudbox for sculpting. However ,I feel , that maya is kinda out dated, more like a veteran in the 3d as 3dsmax, so I started to take a look of some other programs, like blender, cinema 4d, they look more updated and I guess, new-school.

As for mudbox, the same thing, I took a sneak peak at the new zbrush and was blown away, it had everything and lot more.

Long story short, what do you use and what do you think, witch software is more advanced right now?

P.S was thinking of starting to learn blender for modeling (as it has a engine built in, that’s cool) and zbrush for sculpting!

Thanks!

I use 3D Studio Max. Thing is most 3d apps do pretty much the same thing, especially for game work. I don’t think any of the new software is worth relearning for.

Blender

Maya and Zbrush.

Modo601 SP4 - 3DCoat

This might sound weird, but I use Trimble (google) Sketchup
and while probably one of the most simple software, it does create some interesting stuff !

It really comes down to personal preferences as most of the software packages offer very similar features. I use whatever gets the job done best/fastest.

It all depends on the personal perferences and ultimately on the money you are willing to spend on a modelling software.
I use Blender, primarily because i don’t have the funds to buy software like 3ds and Maya, but after using it for awhile i became used to the user interface and can get work done very fast.
All in all, just use the software you feel more confortable with.

I’m actually the one that writes the code, and not the one with stylus in hand, but ‘we’ use Blender for modeling, Sculptris for sculpting. Both are free, so there’s that. Besides games, we do animations and sometimes stills, mainly using LuxRender (also free) as a render engine. We also have heavy demand for distributed rendering (unbiased renderers tend to cause that), and it’s nice when you don’t have to spend a truckload of licensing money for a ~100 node farm.

The artist friend of mine likes Blender alot, switched from 3DS Max few years ago. I like the openess and built-in python interpreter :). If I were now to learn a new software for 3D modeling, I wouldn’t even consider others after seeing what Blender is capable of.

Cheetah3D
It seems like such a simple program but you can do just about everything with it.

thank’s , didn’t know such programs as Cheetah3D and Sculptris , will check it out!

I feel really comfortable in maya, just wanted to try something fresh, will see, I can always use two software’s!

Gimp. lol

I didn’t know that you can create 3d models with Gimp.

Blender. I don’t feel like dropping $4K on a software when there’s nothing 3DsMax or Maya can do significantly better.

Except the large ammount of money you are almost wrong :). For example you have BIPED and CAT system at 3ds max so you can mix animations, load them easely and the most impressive load the same animation to any other skeleton and this other skeleton can be different from the source, different spine count, finggers, foot, legs, hands so on. And the motion mixer is the fastet way to load milions of animatons to many skeletons at the same max file.

 … I beleave this is something that Blender can’t do
