Hi there. Just joined up today, and hoping to learn to make some games.
Now Unity3D seams to be the way to go- So have been looking at some different links in here and love it.
Now thing is im very inexperienced in game making.
What ive figured out so far is I would need a model program. (chose 3dsmax which i have been studying a bit )
A program to help putting the models into gameplay. (Unity)-
And then some programming.
What programming language is the best ?
Ive figured C# is? but not sure. Some suggest Java. But from my own experience Java just seams to have many flaws? (talking about playing* a java based game. )
So yeah need a suggestion for the best, and not the easiest. Im ready to test myself and see how far i can go.
Also recommendation to the best source to learn from, be it the net or a book, id appreciate a link to the site or product.
Otherwise seams this community is good for overall all topics for making games, so happy to have signed up and eager to rip through the forums and suck in some knowledge.

Welcome to the community. I have to warn you that this question can cause an big argument here :). The question to ask is " What programming language is best FOR ME ". It depends on your needs. I chose JavaScript because I find that there is more video tutorials on the net for the JavaScript. And you have to know that the JavaScript (also known as UnityScript) is not the Java programing language, there is a lot of topics on the forum about that so read it first, then decide.
Here you will find all you need to learn working with Unity: http://forum.unity3d.com/forums/23-Teaching
Thanks allot.- And ill try not to offend users of certain languages int he future
But ill look through the section and see what i gather.
(pretty hard to start up from nothing here hehe- But kinda gotten the hang of modeling and quite good learning skills so shouldnt be that impossible. But lets see)-
thx for the info and the link.
No problem, the modeling skils are extremely useful, Im trying to learn blender but it is hard to learn two huge software at the same time. Good luck, and I hope to see your games soon.
Well i hope to see them too
You have anything out or something you are working on? (just curious)-
But never tried blender. But ive seen 3ds along with Maya are very respected for modeling. And seams there are allot of books/tutorial to get going in 3ds- not saying im a master, but its quite easy to get a hang of the basics.
I am currently working on 2D Super Mario Clone Project, it is a part of the Walker Boys Studio - Unity Training Course ( you should check it out it is a great way to learn Unity)
Actually I started 3d modeling with Maya ( ameazing software) but then I decided to swich to Blender because it is free, and you never know whether the hobby will turn into somethig more seriously in the future.
Sure makes sense and might try that course.
+1 There are a lot more videos out there for JavaScript (UnityScript) then C#. Or at least that I can find!
I recommend looking at both C# and JavaScript and then deciding which one you like to work with best. I work with JavaScript. Also, simply knowing either language is not enough. It’s one thing to know the syntax of these languages, it’s a completely different thing to be good at game design and engineering. You have to know how to create modular systems and implement gameplay using the code. For example, just because a person knows how to write in English with correct grammar, doesnt mean the same person could write a dissertation for a doctorate degree from Harvard or something. Learning syntax and how to write code is easy, but look at some good books on game design and theory. Also, sounds stupid, but play lots of games. Analyze them and do some critical thinking about how the developers put the systems together of the game, scripted events, AI, gameplay mechanics, etc.- this will really accelerate your game design capabilities.
Thx ill take you suggestion to heart.
And believe me. . . The last part. . . ive been doing that my whole life. haha. Thats not trying to a smart-ass, but games are a other kind of art in my eyes. And always been attracted to them.
But ever since i got the idea to actually try and make one of my own, i have been very observant of features and lack off in games. Always thinking what “I” would have done. And how “I” would do it.
Not in any way implying i am better then those who made the games Ive played. But helps fuel ideas for projects. So no, doesnt sound stupid at all.
Already have two projects thought out and still adding to the ideas. But am gonna be doing some of the tutorials in here and see where it leads me.
Thanks for the responses in here. Very helpful.
No, by all means, I dont think you’re being a smart ass for thinking that way, it is perfectly normal, and in fact everyone who gets somewhere thinks like that in the beginning. I’m sure James Cameron, Ridley Scott (seen interview with him where he talks about thinking this way), Hideo Kojima, etc. all think this way and always have. You need to, it’s normal, if you don’t, then you wont get much anywhere.
well that just makes sense then. hehe. But great. Currently waiting for a new setup to arrive this week since my current went apeshit when modeling hair :S
So until then im just eagerly waiting and browsing this forum.
One thing ive been wondering. . .
I know what programs are used for modeling. And which for putting the models to life. . .
But what about effects? (of course ill learn this with time and doing some tutorial reading. ) - but bored and might as well ask.
Like. . . Drool. hehe or sparkles hoovering above a bed. . . where are those made?
Depends what effects.
Nowadays a lot of game studios use VFX simulation software to create Hollywood photorealistic effects, render them out to sequences, and apply them as animations on particle system. Once some post work is done, touching up, etc. you can make some incredibly realistic and amazing particle (special) effects. Have a look at some professional VFX software, like FumeFX, Krakatoa, etc.
Look at games like Call of Duty and Halo Reach for good examples of this.
Great. Me too I’ve been new to unity. Try to do the penelope project, because it cover a lot of stuff and have a pdf tutorial that is easy to learn. Wait, what platform are going to use? because me, Im developing a game for ios platform.
anyway here are some link for some tutorials that I downloaded
http://www.jefusion.com/2011/05/live-action-ouran-high-cast-confirmed.html
http://www.filesonic.com/file/136107991/Design3-Complete.set.of.Unity3D.tutorials.part10.rar → i forgot the main link
read some forums, read the documentation, download all samples from the unity website sample apps
for the PL, c# or javascript
I know how to code both,
javascript is much easier to learn and to code but c# is much cleaner in terms of coding.
thx for the respond angelann.
but no im going with WIN- and if all goes great later on id love to start on some console.
(im a vivid 360 fan so)…
oh
I might try those to, I seen an app that uses kinect. so awesome! err its a video. and he’s using unity.
yes ive seen a fair amount of people experimenting with Kinect. really a genius little machine.-
