What would you buy?

I am curious. If you had, say, 300 bucks to spend at the Asset Store, what would you buy?

I’d spend $97 of it on PDF renderer, since that’s something I need for an upcoming project and then spend the rest on hamburgers

Really depends on my current project. My wishlist has everything from unicorns to terrain systems to 2D boats to complete RTS packs to IK systems.

With the project I am currently working on one of my first choices would likely be InControl despite the new Input system becoming available in an experimental state this summer. Outside of that my choices would be assets that assist with the more artistic side of development although a good cube-style voxel engine with source code would be appreciated.

More than InControl, I really have to recommend Rewired. I’ve used both and Rewired just seems to be more robust and a bit easier to work with when you need a combination of keyboard/controller options. It’s a tenner more but absolutely worth it.

Already own it. For simple projects where I don’t need to get heavily involved in the API it was fantastic but as soon as I needed something more complex (eg remapping) the docs seriously ticked me off and I stripped it out of the project.

Oh yeah, remapping is a bit of a pain. I’ve stuck to just theming the template for that.

Why do you need hamburgers for an upcoming project?

Because if I don’t sustain myself on a steady supply of hamburgers I revert back to a primitive state that isn’t conducive to game development.

I’d buy the Asset Store team a round of beers.

Probably toon models. I enjoy coding the games, but I can’t make art assets to save my life. Most games I envision have an anime style to them and the asset store is the only place I’ve seen with a selection of licensed models

There’s so much you can do with what’s free these days! Unless there’s something you’re sure you’ll need that’s on sale, I’d stick with what’s freely available - and what you can make by yourself, of course - and only purchase what you’re absolutely certain you’ll need to finish the project.

I have bought a lot of stuff from the asset store and I still like a fair bit of what I bought. Some of the cool stuff I bought, though, has gone obsolete or got adopted by Unity and is now part of the engine (which is also great, but it would be better if I’d saved that money!).

I agree with @hopeful . Never buy anything until you absolutely need it for the project. Thinking you might need it down the line isn’t a good enough reason and can easily bite you. I’ve made that mistake more than once myself.

The only exception would be something you want to tear apart to learn from.

This is not to say that there aren’t tons of great assets on the Asset Store or that the developers aren’t worth supporting. I purely mean that money is a finite resource, so make sure it’s going to the right product for your projects.

I get your point. I guess I was wondering whether there might be some generally useful packages, for example a UI package, which would be useful across different projects.

The change would be spent on Dr. Peppers.

If you’re having difficulty with something like UI, search for free stuff first, like this. It might be enough to get you going.

As much as I could off my wish list that would speed up development of my current project.
But it would probably take me 2 days to choose because I’m fickle when it comes to purchasing content/tools that have a limited shelf life.

Playmaker and whatever other asset that catches my eye.

The one thing I automatically add to every project is Enhanced Console, so I might well buy the Pro version. Otherwise, something to help me create shaders.

keep it and save for a HTC vive
