The last time I used Unity I made this “game jam” style thing in about 16 hours, it is essentially at the moment an R-type sorta game. Being honest it was the first time I’ve enjoyed making a game in a long while and I was thinking about picking it up again. Looking at making a couple of games that take around three months a piece.
Just wondering, what to do with it? I could mix missions as side scroller and 3D view game, I was thinking about adding big baddies and a whole slurry of upgrades via a currency system. At a push I could make it so you could go down to the planet and engage in SHMUP missions for added resources, plus I could weave a small bit of story into it too. I mean it took me 16 hours to make this so it’s not unconcievable to do all the above…
Still, trying to make what’s essentially a relatively simple side scrolling space shmup into a modern concievable (impressive?) project not everyone can do is an interesting challenge…
Or I could just drop it completely and take suggestions from you fine ladies and gents… Any thoughts welcome.
How much time is this? Full-time 3 months, or X number of hours per week.
You might consider taking some inspiration from some of the (half) finished products on the market.
I was browsing through my wish list recently and came across a game I didnt remember ever placing there.
Anyway, Ive never played the game and probably wont pick it up because to be honest - it looks about half or less finished.
What caught my eye were the visuals and, I think, the potential it shows, but its not hard to see the game is not a complete fleshed out experience.
Cant provide a link due to lazy mobile browsing but it is called Terragearth.
Might provide some inspirational ‘ideas’.
i would turn this in a roguelike where content is random from left to right, you can decide to go into station or other path etc… kind like FTL but still being mixed with a shmup
Can you pinpoint what made the difference for you between your various projects and leads to you enjoying this one but not the others? I think this could be a very important aspect to think about and design future games around. I’m so interested in this because I have trouble figuring out what it is for myself exactly that made me no longer enjoy working on my projects.
In essence the removal of characters, trying to get them up to modern standards is a time consuming slog I’d rather not deal with… Even if I replaced them with humanoid robots I might get away with it…
