Which one would you prefer? if you dont like either, then tell me what you would like instead.
(yes, i know i spelt built wrong)

I’d rather stick to Ventrilo/TeamSpeak.
Every time a game comes out with built-in voice chat, its garbage ![]()
total void poll:
text vs voice as standalone. you are required to at least have a similar option, which is now not the case. Like apples vs oranges.
A correct poll would be:
What would you prefer:
[ ] Having a stanalone voice system, like Team-Speak, to talk with others you are playing with.
[ ] Having an integrated non standalone voice system, to talk with others you are playing with.
from the two valid options: I would choose for the integrated voice system.
(although i prefer text. but thats not what the poll is about)
well, im pretty sure voice isnt supported in unity, still, so i said text
See, the whole problem is this isnt an MMO, its just a multi-player game (basically D&D) and so im trying to find a way for all the players to communicate with each other in game, and the team speak seems a little bit of a hassle (though i have no experience with it, havent gotten around to using it)
I’d prefer text. With text you can communicate with people you dont know, with ventrillo you need to be a part of a clan or something, and I don’t really like that.
This is simple. Use both.
well, how would i work both in? like an option to disable the built-in one and use team speak instead?
Haven’t you played CS? SC2? WoW? CoD?
All those games give you both functionality without disabling one or the other. You can send text chats if you want, or you can send voice instead.
To be more practical, for example, you could press the ‘y’ key to begin typing a text message, type your message and press enter to send.
Or you can push (and hold) another key while saying stuff into a microphone, then let go of the key when you’re done.
But to answer the original question, if I had to choose one or the other, I would go with text chat.
Not everyone is comfortable enough to use their voice, for example, if you have a seriously thick accent, people might have trouble understanding you.
Another reason is… if your girlfriend is sleeping in bed about 2.5m behind your back (My room is tiny), the last thing you want is to wake her up by yelling in your microphone, “ZERGz RUSH ZOMG HELPzz”
well, i havent really played any online multiplayer games before, mainly because i dont have an XBox or PS3 and i havent really been interested in WOW
Fair enough, but really, seeing how other games do things will be worth your while, so I say go play more games ![]()

well, i have played a few, but the main thing is i dont like player vs player style games, i like more player vs CPU/AI kinds of games, and as i said earlier, this is a D&D kind of game, it actually is based on a variant of D&D (which i plan on, once i finish, asking the respective owners if they mind me releasing it and selling it) so this will have pretty much all quests, nothing else really, and you can do it any way you want, and it wont even be that similar to the previous time you did the quest, and another player (the owner of the server) could be the DM. knowing this, which one would you prefer? or does it make a difference?
I’d still prefer text IF I could only choose one. Text is a great universal equalizer after all.
But again, I prefer having both even more.
well, i could do both, does team speak have any special integration system, or is it basically standalone?
http://www.teamspeak.com/?page=teamspeak3sdk
Though I’m not sure about price and how it plays with Unity
well, i searched for Teamspeak and unity, doesnt seem like anyones gotten them to play well yet
Teamspeak should be left standalone. Players of your game will use one of the three available whether it is TeamSpeak, Ventrillo, or Mumble. There’s little to no sense including voice chat in your game when there is FREE alternatives that someone can simply download and run and get going in 2 minutes. Just have text chat in your game. If players want to use voice they can just download one of the VOIP applications and use that.
ok, ill do that, thank you jeffro and arvz for your valued input.
It depends on the type of game. For high paced multiplayer action, TS or Ventrilo.
For more casual/turn based do this/do that gaming, text.
Although giving the player the choice is always a win.
You aren’t really giving the player a choice if you don’t include text though. For this kind of game I would absolutely include text chat, and users are free to use voice chat if they choose. Not including text chat pretty much precludes anyone who can’t be on voice chat at that particular moment from playing, since an online cooperative game with no form of available communication would be an enormous headache.
Do text, let users set up voice themselves if they wish. Later, once the game is out and doing well if you get a lot of requests for built in voice chat (you almost certainly will not) you can explore adding it to the game.
It’s not a question of A or B though, it’s a question of B or not B - A isn’t up to you. Not B for a cooperative game would be a mistake imho (assuming a game with similar breadth to other D&D games)
EDIT:
For what it’s worth, microphone access should be available in Unity 3.5 - making an in-game voice chat option possible late summer-early fall without needing a .dll based solution.
