Please understand I wasn’t sure where to post this because the asset store sub-forum seems more geared towards products currently up there for sale and I wasn’t certain whether that would be the appropriate place to ask this question.
I’ve got some assets that I’ve been working on and would like to host them on the asset-store but I would like to be sure that I’m offering them for a fair price.
Here are the pictures of these assets. They are all using one texture plate which is their atlas and I’ve tested them with batching and they do work. None of the assets here exceed 250 tris as most of them are rounded out to be about 100 each. I’ve also made sure that the atlas has space for other assets as well for when they’re ready however, I can easily pare that down if need be. They were made to be visible from a distance and to be as low-poly as I could manage so I focused mostly on getting them to have a good silhouette but if you view them from close up, they may not look as good as from farther away.
These are using a toon shader on them with the outlines. that’s what I made them for initially but if you would like to see them with a regular shader then feel free to ask and I’ll get some screenshots made. The shader will not be included (as it is a shader that I had purchased that does a little more than the toon shading…)
They only have a diffuse texture on them (and the toon ramp for the shader which is in the standard assets folder… for the package I’ll be including the diffuse only.)
This shows the assets themselves laid out. The shadow is basically a single plane that’s “Faking” the shadow… if you’re using the lightmapping it’s likely you wouldn’t need that in there. I’ve tried making them in all sorts of different combinations so there’s a lot of flexibility in how you arrange them.
I’m leaning towards pricing them between $5-10 but I would like some feedback to see if this is low-balling it or if they’re too pricey. Do you think that is a fair price for them?
Very nice! I love the style - it’s always hard to tell what price to charge, but I do think it’s too low. Are you planning to make more (eg: trees)? Do you plan to create specials/packs?
I always worry about pricing too low - low prices can have a negative effect on sales, and you obviously want to make money from this, so make sure you price it at a point where you can make profit.
I’d suggest pushing the price up to 15-25. I’d be willing to pay even more than that (though others may disagree) considering the amount of time/money I would need to pay to have them custom-made.
I consider a lot more than price when purchasing assets though - I look at what else you have available, whether or not you have an active facebook page/website, how the style suits what I’m creating, if there’s any other upcoming assets that I may be interested in, whether you offer support/customizations - all these contribute to how much value I place in your products and how much I’d be willing to pay.
There could be some gold in them thar hills. Guess I can add that to my “To do” list.
Yeah, as much as I do have stuff up there, it’s only one thing and it’s a framework that relies on Playmaker so I didn’t feel justified asking for a lot since users had to invest in a $90 add-on merely to use it… And it isn’t incredibly complex either. So, when it comes to art assets I’m at a loss as to what to really price them at.
I’ll add that to my list of things to do then. Shouldn’t be too difficult to do… hopefully.
Thank you everyone! you’ve certainly given me a lot of help here and for that I’m grateful.
I wish the asset store would show total sales per item. It would help give an indication of the number of sales you could expect.
I’d still be worried about pricing them too low - but I’m not a 3d artist, so I don’t know how much time/effort went into these.
Just don’t undersell yourself - they could be basic primitives/textures, but they’re still well out of reach of my skill level. The way I see it, I need to support 3d artists to continue doing what I do, so 3d artists must make enough profit from the price paid to continue putting out more work.
With all due respect I do not think these are worth any money. Its too stylised and basic. Maybe if you created something with more substance it would have some value.
But… SmellyDogs, even as an artist, even if you could make those rocks in 2 hours, even if it’d take you 1 hour… when you’re in a project and want to move fast, $5 pay themselves.
Nevermind if you’re not an artist, you’re paying for the time behind those rocks and the time it took to gain that expertise.
Having your work done instantly, not getting distracted or sidetracked with the little details, gotta worth something. Maybe not to everyone at any moment, but to someone at the right moment, it should.
It’s not really how much this asset is really worth, that’s way too relative to put a number. It depends on who, when, and how many people need it.
Honestly he can put the price he wants. If he sells them at $2, more people will buy it, rocks can be used in almost any game, seriously, come to think of it probably 50+% games have rocks, have you guys noticed?
