hey guys,
so I just recently started using unity and learning java/javaScript. What type of game would be a good place to start. obviously not an rpg, i was thinking something like a platform or maybe some form of shooter?

follow some beginner tutorials there are plenty listed in the Teaching section.
Many people will suggest trying to build Pong but i have never made it so I can’t comment. I can however suggest for RPG the BurgZerg Arcade hack n slash tutorials, or for a FPS style, the ETeeski tutorials. Theres plenty to choose from, the most important thing is to dive in and get your hands dirty.
In this order:
Pac Man is harder than people realize. You have to be good at math to pull of the AI…
You could make a bowling game, give you a taste of physics as well as rendering.
cool thanks a lot guys ![]()
Do Pong, then a 3D table tennis game (just with 2 bats and a ball, no characters). That way you’ll be comfortable with both 2D and 3D, and the physics system.
Something like Pacman will get you thinking nicely about AI.
IMPORTANT : FINISH THE GAME YOU STARTED. DO NOT EVER GIVE UP OR STOP AND MOVE ONTO THE NEXT ONE.
2nd most important, make sure you have a GDD written up for each game.
Pong is good. Or minigolf. I learned a lot about physics scripting when I did that.
You could try something like sumo wrestling. Just make a big circle and an AI that’ll charge directly at the player and push them until they fall off.
Another possibility is a matching game. (6 pairs of cards mixed up and face down on a table. Try to match 2… if you don’t get a match, the cards flip back over. You win when you find all pairs.)
Also, don’t just make the core gameplay. Make the whole thing, including menu screens, high score tables, configurable options, etc.
I needed a break and made a MineSweeper clone. It would be pretty good for a beginner too.
If I were you I would avoid anything to requires any kind of AI. So something like Minesweeper, or Tetris, or Breakout, or anything else that is purely player vs. environment would be good. As soon as you decide to do something with AI, even simple AI like Pong, you have new considerations to think about.
I would suggest the Lerpz tutorial.
