Whats the easiest modeling software?

Whats the easiest modeling software out there that is compatible with unity. I really like maya and i am getting the hang of it. I like that blender is free but it is so complicated!! Also anyone know a good n00b tutorial on blender?

There is no easy modelling software, it’s just a matter of getting used to in my opinion. However, there are those with cleaner layouts and more noob friendly features. You can try Cinema4D, it’s one of the easier ones to learn.

I tried quite a few different modellers. I settled on Wings3D as I found it far simpler for doing low poly modelling and texturing. It is free, which is nice.

The basic principle is that there are context-sensitive menus that you get when you right click. Have nothing selected and you get options for creating primitives (sphere, cone, etc.). Vertex, edge, face and object (there are icons for each mode top-centre) options come up when you have one or more of them selected (space bar to deselect).

Because the menus are context sensitive, there are fewer options to worry about.

Texturing took a bit of finding out, but it is simple really. Right-click with an object selected. Select UV mapping. Mark the edges you want to cut (to create continuous areas when unfolded), then select Continue (marking and continue are right-click options. Select Unfolding.

Import your texture using the File menu. Bring up the Outliner window. Highlight your texture, and drag the name (not the texture icon, it’s highlighted name) onto the UV mapping view that appeared when you selected unfolding (sometimes doesn’t want to do it, unselect, reselect your texture). Now manipulate the cut-out areas to match where you want them on your textures.

Just export your models into a folder of your Unity project to import them. They will be textured if you have the texture in your Unity project folders.

Second vote for Wings3D, but I’d also just mention that I found Carrara to be very easy to learn. Blender seems daunting at first, but once you learn a dozen or so functions you’ll have it wired. The blenderartists forums are also a fantastic asset that will help you as you run into obstacles.

Thanks ill try out the demo.

Blender.

FragMotion is less than 40 bucks and does it all,UV mapping, bone animation, ect but needs Ultimate Unwrap to convert the .x files to .fbx Ultimate Unwrap is around 50. If you read up on importing in the doc’s you will see that just about every choice will leave something out when importing. Unless you get the 1000 to 3000 dollar programs. Fragmotion is free to use if you dont mind a reminder to purchase every few minutes but fully functional. But dont get the newest version 102 cause it has some bugs as it just came out. but instead the 100 or 101 version is very stable. The upside is everything imports. And its so easy to use, but as said before the best stuff has tons of features and will take a little time to master.

In college we used Cinima4D, I now use Maya. However I have used Mudbox, 3DS Max, Milkshape, Blender, CAD and other tools in the past.

I am better at moving verticies around and find the workflow in Maya to be friendly in that aspect. Honestly I just like the workflow in Maya more so than the others… workflow meaning how the interface is setup and how it is used. I think no one is better than the other because they all make verticies and polygons. It all depends on your learning style I think.

I sat down after college to learn 3DS Max and Maya at the same time. I found Maya easier to learn. However I found 3DS Max could be used on almost anything. I generally make my stuff in Maya then open it in Max to tweek and export for different engines. Alot of game engines support 3DS Max … not to many support Maya.
