When is 2018 releasing

When is 2018 final version gonna be available to public??

When it’s ready.

We don’t know. Unity has changed their policy away from setting a certain release date because if the bugs aren’t fixed they would either have to release and have people complaining about the bugs or move the date off and face complaints that it’s late. It’s simply far more sensible to just release when ready and not bother with estimations.

I think it was in the GDC keynotes where they mentioned it’ll be April. But no more details about the exact date.

Probably by the end of April because there still isn’t released release candidate.

The website also says “April”… so tentatively next month sometime.

Still in a crashloop with LWRP and occasional particle-related crashes, so I’d be pissed if they declared this one working

What I figured. This has looked like one of the more ambitious updates in a while, so I’m expecting it to be held together with duct tape and bailing wire. Frankly all the 2018 goals look like they are going to make the engine a little more rickety for now.

Ambitious, yes, but it solidifies some previous things (.NET 4.6 moves from experimental to official). And I would expect some features, if they make it into the 2018 release (such as ECS) to be still “beta” features, so while available in the engine, they won’t be expected to be 100% functional.

  • so wait for 2018.4 - similar to 5x cycle? :hushed:

I always view the first couple releases in a Unity cycle as novelty. I wouldn’t recommend upgrading a serious project to 2018 until probably November at the earliest. But more likely with all the experimental features coming down the pipe you won’t want to upgrade to 2018 until 2019 is out.

Hurry up, we need the job system for our next big feature!

Looks like this time would not be the same beginning as 5x or 2017, actually the performance is too attractive that it might worth to jump on the 2018 train.
Although 2018 is experimental, it has more support now. If the bug counts to previous release are similar, why waiting?

With the introduction of Unity LTS you might just decide there is only one release per year. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s the price of progress I suppose. I’m just developing on betas and when my game seems alright I’ll lock it to whatever is most problem free :stuck_out_tongue:

You aren’t concerned about a beta irreparably damaging your project and having to roll back to before opening it in the beta?

2018 is out now - 2018.1.0f2 has appeared in the Unity Hub app

Will be fun to see what breaks tonight when I test it with our game!

Indeed, locking this now. Any problems please use bug reporter

And late reply:

Of course not. I have version control up the wazoo!
