when is real time path tracing coming?
UE already has this bahahahhha
is the team working on this?
any updates? on this
You can make a feature request on the roadmap. I don’t think this is already included, but HDRP does have some path tracing elements
This is my opinion, but I hope that I’m not alone at this.
Text below is about gamedev, not about other industries.
This statement about nowadays, not the future (5 years???).
I hope, Unity makes other things rather this tech, because “wow, it’s in a realtime, light is so cool!”, but UE shows in practice that nobody can properly handle it for the most cases new techs, which enable “cool looking” by default, while not including 10000 RTX in the requirements for the game.
Only devs of Fortnite know what they are doing, in my opinion.
So, this is just waste of the time for the Unity devs to make focus on this, because:
- Hardware and algorithms aren’t so powerful today.
- Devs cannot handle this properly, so today we get amazing games with cool graphics and 12 FPS (in some cases, raster pipeline even better in looking in comparison with “just enable it and cool graphics ready”, because RT and PT aren’t about just enable checkbox HELLO!!!, it requires more efforts to make really good not lagging graphics).
But a good idea would be to add path tracing for a preview of the baked lightmap (and this is mentioned in the roadmap).
I think the biggest use case of it now is virtual production.
But since Unity finally fixed it’s main priority back to game development, I don’t think this will and should be a priority now as well
