When Is Unity going to update the UI of the editor it’s so dated now?
You mean the look? I think it’s fine. If you mean the behind the scenes stuff, I think they’re slowly doing that.
You mean the look that apple gave a design award to, that everyone is still copying? Hopefully not for another 10 years. Maybe subtle style changes like flattening some bevels but we don’t really need Unity to start breaking everyone’s tools.
Moved thread to general discussion from editor scripting, as it’s not actually asking or solving anything specific but a general discussion about it.
The UI is not dated. Its perfectly fine as it is.
There’s no reason to literally waste resources in setting up a team to change the look of something that is intended for developers. (besides it even looks good anyway!)
In my opinion, working on useless fancy stuff instead of real problems is really the last thing Unity needs right now.
Unless its just swapping out image files (and we know that’s not what would happen anyway) there will be even more stuff breaking, UI bugs, … no thanks.
Right, because we all know how good they are at updating UI/UX.
Also, it seems fine to me.
We actually have explored updating the look of the UI, but in general, making a UI that is a bit more… well, ‘designed’, is not very easy with IMGUI. It’s one of the things motivating us to build the UIElements system.
So what?
Unity is not a consumer level tool that must be maintained to look good. Its a professional level tool that must be maintained to function well.
If there is a problem with the functionality or productivity of the UI, unity should address that. But a problem with the look and feel of the UI is fairly low on the priority list.
I’m starting to believe Unity has pet projects just to respond to these sorts of threads with a “Yes, we thought about it, here’s our current experimental system”.
I’m not fussed about how it looks, but I do agree it could use exactly the kind of developer-oriented functionality updates that the UIElements thing seems aimed at.
