I know a Dev Log is insightful as we progress through making a game - especially in retrospect - and is a good motivational tool to keep a project on the rails and hopefully build some interest… at what point in development do you begin a Dev Log, and where? I have a complete level I am comfortable with showing and moving development wise at a decent speed. I would like to track the progress if nothing else / as well as using it as a motivational tool to keep moving on a solo project.
When do you start your Dev Log/Blog and where? Do you find it helps?
I started one for the purpose of having some interesting content ready when I am ready to start promoting as I get it more feature complete. I also find it interesting for myself to see how things have progressed. People don’t go find it on their own though without you pushing your game out there. I made mine on BlogSpot, which is free.
Something like BlogSpot is pretty tailor made for quickly and easily putting up a development log, from just listing changes to writing short articles about it. You can link to it from your own website. That’s my recommendation at least.
Quality devlogs take time, better to skip them than make bad ones, I have only made two video based devlog in the course of two years we have developed our game. The others have been text based.
However you dont need todo advanved devlogs, you can just do small update videos, we have done that since day one of our game, pretty fun going back tothose two years later. Here is our first one
Its important you build a player base early so the more updates the better, I still trying to understand why some videos get huge interest from the community, like this video, it got thousand views within the first day, while others take months to reach that view count
