I just tried to pre-purchase the upgrade to Unity Pro 4 (actually, I just wanted to see what happened). I own Unity Pro 3.5 with the basic Android/iOS license (I payed for the Android license, while I got the iOS when it was given for free).
Anyway, I selected only Unity 4 in the upgrade form, and this scary message appeared:
“You have not chosen upgrades for existing add-ons. Add-ons from previous versions are not compatible with newer versions of Unity. If you choose to continue and purchase this upgrade, the existing add-ons will be removed from the license and you will not be able to upgrade them at a later point”
Is this an error? Or is it serious? I can’t believe we lose our add-ons upgrading power (meaning we’ll have to pay them full-price) if we don’t upgrade them immediately. It’s a lot of money (which I definitely don’t have right now), and I can’t believe we’re not allowed to upgrade gradually. Also, that message seems to suggest that, if you go on using Unity 3 along Unity 4 (which is quite logic, since upgrading old projects to Unity 4 will probably be very painful) and you don’t upgrade the Android/iOs add-ons, you won’t be able to publish for Unity 3 Android/iOs?
To resume, two scary points should be made more clear:
after purchasing Unity 4, can you upgrade your add-ons gradually to v4?
can you use Unity 3 and 4 together, while only having iOS/Android add-ons for v3 (and thus only publishing to those platforms via Unity 3 and Unity 3 projects)?
I hope someone from Unity will say that message was an error. Please reply. Thanks.
The information on the store is currently incorrect. You will be able to upgrade your other licenses at a later date. The store will be updated shortly to correct this.
I assume that this was intended to prevent you using your $200 discount from Pro on iOS Pro, and so on. It would be rather a kick in the teeth if my Android license was taken away from me just because I don’t want to upgrade it this time. It would also be contrary to the terms on which it was sold to me. Hopefully it’s just a day one glitch.
I have another question
I own Unity3D free with iOS and Android basic. Can I upgrade my iOS and Android basic to 4.0 together with Unity3D free and in a second time use my 200$ coupon to buy Unity3D Pro?
Is there any information on how exactly this will work? Do you need to have two separate Unity installations (if that is even possible?), or can you use Unity 4.0 Editor with your Unity 3.5 Mobile licenses and Unity recognizes that automatically (for example stripping away Mobile Features new to Unity 4 according to your License)? Would love to keep a single installation, but whatever it takes is fine by me as long I’m not forced to upgrade it all
I am also glad we can have two installs going at the same time. As much as I hate to say it, I don’t see 850$ worth of IOS /android Pro updates to justify the cost. I personally think the mobile upgrade costs are a little tight for what they are adding. Still appreciate you guys for your work though ;).
Well, we can only hope that we’ll add more features to 4.1 and 4.2 and so on, so that at some point in 4.x cycle you will say “oh yeah, now they have added enough features for me to upgrade”… We’ll be working hard to make this happen
Seriously? Upgrade your IOS now so that one day perhaps we will maybe chuck in some goodness so you don’t continue to feel screwed over? Aras, can you honestly name 2 products in the ‘real world’ that you would purchase with that sort of arrangement?
I’m starting to think this rushed leap to 4.0 is to mitigate cashflow bleeding after that pricey purchase of Mecanim. Either that or UT is taking the Rovio approach to product development. Create something awesome, then start gouging customers because you can. Must be all high fives round the office these days as you realize how so many loyal customers feel shafted.
That’s not the situation. Read the earlier posts in this thread - when the store launched, the “you must upgrade everything now” thing was a mistake, and they’ve already fixed it. You don’t have to upgrade iOS now, or any time.
Are you saying that I can upgrade to Unity 4 Pro, and keep my 3.5 iOS Pro? Meaning, I can develop with Unity 4 Pro and when I press the ‘build’ button for iOS, it will build to 3.5 iOS Pro, and automatically remove 4.0 iOS pro features (such as Mobile shadows)?
