When using a third party game engine...

… that contains bugs. But with features you really want to use. What is the best way to proceed?

  • Try and get the third party to fix the bugs
  • Try and fix the bugs yourself (if it is open)
  • Work around the bugs

In particular there are bugs in Unity GUI for Windows Store that I are holding me up. The ideal solution would be if the bugs get fixed. But I guess we don’t live in an ideal world. And maybe it’s best to work around the bugs.

Perhaps even whilst other people are waiting for the bugs to be fixed, the people who work round the bugs or come up with innovative solutions, even if they are not ideal, will actually gain from being first.

I suppose it’s foolish of me to bank on new features that are just out and contain bugs rather than to use what works. I think you can spend more time lobbying to get bugs fixed and submitting bug reports and arguing on forums than if you just, say wrote your own GUI.

  1. Report the bugs to Unity first?

Also I think I saw you post about them weeks ago (did you report them?) but I have also used UI with Windows Store builds since that and did not encounter an issues.

Well it’s like they say about presidential voting (if you’re legally allowed at least).

You can’t complain if you don’t vote LOL.

So you can’t complain if you don’t report the bug LOL.

But yeah, I’d report the bug first, it’s the only way the Unity Staff will ever know whats going on unless they just so happen to run into it.

What about a combination of reporting, trying to work around it, changing the design if possible and lastly trying to fix it in the source if it’s available?

This isn’t an either-or decission. Always bugreport if something is broken. Propose it on feedback.unity3d.com if it should be in there - the more important it is the more you should also propagade your proposal in other forms (forums, twitter, facebook …).

The thread title is also rather misleading. This is a pretty particular question about Unity UI - I would have asumed that it’s about a game engine like Ogre, Unreal or the like …
So: Communicate clear and make decissions based on severity. Always bugreport - for every software that supports it.

Hello yoonite,

You seem to make a fair few threads about how the new UI is ‘broken’ for Windows Store Apps. Can you provide bug reports, with repro projects, at all? Or have you already done this?

If he hasn’t it’s probably because he has a pirated pro version, I mean why else not do it LOL.

I have submitted lots of bug reports. But it is fairly obvious to see the UI bugs on Windows Store for anyone who tries it on a touch screen PC. That is why it’s surprising to me!

Also I’ve had replies just saying “it’s a known issue”.

Could you list here the bugs you have filed reports for?

Done that here: Warning to Windows 8 users. - Unity Engine - Unity Discussions

As you can see from the list of bug fixes in Unit 4.6.1 there are no fixes for Windows Store apps.
