I only need to do simple animation’s.
I heard theres some new animation editor in the works… but … but why was it completely removed from 2.5??
What is the best way I can make simple animation clip’s that I can then apply?

2.6 Dunno why they removed it though, but I guess its because they
re adding some new fancy features (curve editing etc.)
When you say “simple animation clips”, do you mean transform animations? Move object from A to B? Scale object etc.?
Yeh abit weird, but i cant wait for the new one!
Yah just that simple,
X 0 to X 1 and back again, ping pong infinity.
I share your pain, I also miss the animation editor. The old one was pretty basic and a bit buggy, but at least it existed. The short answer as to why it was removed is that they didn’t have enough time to fully implement it for 2.5 (lots of pressure to release the Windows version as fast as they could) so the animation editor bit the dust. I’m sure Tom will have a more “politically correct” way of answering this.
I just hope the new editor they’ve promised will be better than the last and will appear in 2.6.
The slightly longer version is that the entire editor was rewritten for 2.5 and given mentioned time constraints and that they were going to redo it anyway, not re-implementing something that was going to be tossed out soon seems like a fair solution to me.
Just to offer a “company reply”, even if a few days on…
When rewriting the new UI for Unity 2.5 all of the editor windows needed to be rewritten and the animation timeline didn’t make it into the 2.5 build on time. We are in fact working on an improved replacement that will appear in a 2.6 release later this summer.
Pre-existing Mac users can install 2.1 and 2.5 in parallel, using 2.1 to generate animations if that’s critical. Or you can use code, a modeling tool, etc. I recognize that’s not necessarily optimal but it’s the answer I have to offer today.
Will it be back in the next iPhone release? Will that release have the sexy 2.5 gui?
Unity and Unity iPhone are separate parallel projects, this window hasn’t disappeared at all from Unity iPhone as it’s still using the old UI. At this time it looks like the next update of Unity iPhone will not get the new UI as we’d rather avoid that disruption and put out the next update sooner (without the UI but with important fixes features) rather than later as that affects you folks in a much better way.
I’m having hideous problems with importing animations in 2.5 at the moment. Can’t figure it out. It worked before, now it isn’t.
I just need simple things like doors opening and I’m on a Mac. Where can I download a version of 2.1 for the animation editor?
Thanks!
If it worked before, but is not working now, and you didn’t download a new version of Unity, then the change must be in your implementation right? Why did it work before? What are you doing differently now?
HiggyB posted a while ago the location of the 2.1 download, but after 10 minutes of searching I can’t find it. PM him and he should be able to hook you up.
Alright, I found it:
http://panther.unity3d.com/download_unity/unity-2.1.0.dmg
Make sure to name your Unity 2.5 folder something different first and then you can install 2.1 alongside it.
Hullo we’re on two threads again.
I can’t figure out what’s different now. That’s why I downloaded a new version of Will’s file and didn’t touch anything, just ran it, because I wanted to use it to figure out what’s going on.
The only thing that is different is that then I was using the demo version of Indie and now, I bought Indie, but they kindly let me have a demo of Pro which is what I’m on at the moment. Would that make a difference?
Thanks. I’ll download that and give it a go.
As far as I can tell it may be something to do with splitting the animation. I’ve got one animation that isn’t split and that works Ok.
I’d just like to chime in with one note,
The new animation editor is looking daaaaaamn cool
Oooh! Oooh! (much jumping up and down with excitement!)
Fantastic!
When?
Ish?
Later this summer, potentially early Fall. BTW, Nicholas Francis (our CCO) blogged about it earlier this year, with some early screenshots. You’ll find that post here, enjoy!
Excellent! Thanks!
