When Will Unity Support Arabic? A Call to Action

Hi,

I would like to address the current lack of Arabic support in TextMeshPro. I am not referring to the Unity interface itself, which seems to be a distant prospect.

Approximately 373 million people speak Arabic as their first language, making it the fourth most spoken native language worldwide. Including Arabic support in Unity would be a significant investment, enabling developers to create games and apps that cater to this large audience.

For context, Adobe began supporting Arabic text in their applications in the mid-2000s. Adobe Photoshop CS4, released in 2008, introduced enhanced support for right-to-left languages, including Arabic. This included better text rendering, direction control, and improved typography features.

As we are now in 2024, it’s surprising that Unity, one of the leading game engines, still does not support Arabic. Is this acceptable for such a prominent platform?

We have support for UI toolkit in unity 6.

Work is still ongoing to improve this.

I am currently using Unity version 6000.0.13f1 and have tried the Advanced Text Generator. However, I find it to be neither a radical nor an accurate solution for Arabic support.

@karl_jones, consider that Adobe and other companies introduced Arabic support in the mid-2000s, yet in 2024, Unity still relies on external tools for this functionality. This is concerning, especially given that other game engines, such as Unreal Engine, have supported Arabic for a long time.

We need to prioritize this issue as an emergency update. Effective communication between developers and players is crucial to conveying the game’s experience. This communication is severely hindered when developers cannot type in their clients’ language, particularly when 373 million people speak Arabic as their first language.

Therefore, adding Arabic support should be treated as an urgent update.

Yeah i did try this tool and it is great tool but some functions still missing.
