Even in Unity4, compression is still horrible compared to the PVRTexTool (encode your texture from this tool and you will get better result).
Why not just have the same quality as PVRTexTool and make our life easier?
Unity does use PVRTexTool (look in Unity.app/Contents/Tools). Unity doesn’t have its own compressor since the PVRTC format is closed.

Is there anyway the quality could match the PVRTexTool in next releases? Even matching old versions of PVRTexTool (v3.23) would solve the whole PVRTC Unity issue specially that using PVRTexTool is just not an option if you want to use the alpha channel of your texture.
I don’t think you understand…they already are using PVRTexTool, as I mentioned (specifically, version 3.40 as of Unity 4.0). As I also mentioned, they don’t have a choice, since that’s the only way to do PVRTC compression. Look at Activity Monitor when you import textures in iOS mode, and you will see PVRTexTool running.

Ok, so there is no solution, we will have to deal with crappy PVRTC compression in Unity according to the reasons you mentioned until “something” happens until then Unity development team can’t do anything about it.
