It seems hard to find buildings with interiors + exteriors. I either find one or the other but not both. I want to make a small town where you can go in each building and loot stuff. Does anyone know of some sites that have city buildings with exterior and interior?
Also what are some good search tips for finding them with both Google : “3d model building + interior” is not coming up with anything really .
I would just use Google warehouse from sketchup but the models are so bad performance wise and take up a lot of draw calls. Unless someone knows of a cheap sketchup model optimizer that makes them perform better.
Last of all does anyone know where I can get like blueprint or floor plans of city buildings. I’ve also searched Google and auto-cad websites for these but they are 99% houses (Which makes sense because that is the market- people buying plans to build a home) but it floods Google I can’t find other buildings. I don’t ever see like a blueprint for a fire station or hospital or downtown apartment.
There are a few on the assetstore, and quite a lot more on turbosquid - but there are downsides to having interiors - you need to make occlusion groups or turn off interiors whilst the player is outside/in another interior, or Unity will be trying to render far too many things.
Also, on the assetstore are kits for buildings that let you build your own (with interiors) from smaller pieces.
Google: Archmodels, architectural visualization models, etc. Something along those lines.
Keep in mind though that those models are meant for CG rendering and not necessarily games, but i can’t imagine polycount of hardsurface stuff being ultra high, you could always optimize them yourself if you get problems.
You will never likely find any public plans for fire houses or hospitals. Due to the nature of their business and the safety of the people inside. Just like bank plans. Would make it very easy for someone to know exactly where the safe is.
You do a cut scene between the interior and the exterior and don’t worry that the windows and doors and such don’t match up between the two although you keep the style the same. You wouldn’t present a castle exterior and a 70s ranch house interior.
Depending on where you live, you may be able to get copies of blueprints of buildings from the local County Records office. Which buildings are available will vary. Of course, these are on paper, so you’d have to build your own models.
Two things to keep in mind is that:
One, you can’t just use the blueprint as-is because that’s someone’s work and you’d be violating copyright.
Two, there will likely be a fee for getting the copies, though this may be as low as just the photocopying charges.
Historical societies and museums that deal with architecture may also be good sources of blueprints to inspire you when creating your own buildings. There are also architecture journals and text books available from many libraries that have partial plans and/or study plans for various buildings.
