Depends on the game, what type is it, online webplayer, offline standalone and so on, also depending on the genre of the game can also effect where its best to sell it. Do you have any more information or a link to a webpage showing your game? If you don’t have one that’s the first thing you need to do before you start contacting anyone, contacting them about your game then later on making a webpage for it does not mean they will go back and check it out as they already know about it and there time is limited and they already used up some of that time on your game already.

You’re mixing up the various components of the supply chain.

It goes Developer → Publisher → Distributor → Retail

Highly unlikely you can sell boxed games directly to retailers any more, if you are lucky you might find a local independent game shop take some copies of your hands, but I would imagine as sale or return terms.

To get into retail you need a distributor, but they aren’t going to be interested in anything that doesn’t shift high volumes and normally have the backing of a publisher with a marketing spend.

Publishers aren’t going to be interested unless its a proven title or built off existing IP.

A developer can be a publisher though, you just set up your own website and sell digital plus boxed copies from it directly to the customer.

If you still want to investigate selling to retailers, then you should be able to find local trade magazines or ‘directories’ that list all distributors. For example in the UK we have MVC, which have adverts from distribution companies selling to the trade (i.e you use that as as tarting point to contact them), but they also produce a yearly directory that lists all the various companies in the supply chain.

However normally you simply higher a sales manager who has experience in the field and the contacts to go to, but that assumes you are an established company able to pay a competitive salary.

Hmmm,

So you have to be a company to get into this.

You can find publishers if you write a novel and that is again sold for the same amount , 2$ but you sweat day and night and it looks little tough to find a publisher for your game.

There’s very little use for a publisher for smaller titles at this point. Retail space (outside of places like Walmart and hardware stores with game baskets) is at a ridiculous premium, from which you’ll see very little in the way of actual returns. Your best bet is going to be self digital distribution, getting on to as many platforms as possible, offering a direct purchase option, and MAYBE getting through the nightmare of Greenlight so you can get on to Steam. Make a game, sell that game yourself, cultivate brand around that as much as you can and try and break out through that.

Even though the success chance is low, it’s still a lot higher than getting a publisher in the first place.
