I wanted to try to make all my own sound effects for my iPhone game, but it turns out that’s tougher than I thought. Does anyone else know a good place to get sound effects? I need some scifi spaceship sounds that hopefully don’t cost too much. And does anyone know how to get the rights to sound effects? Does that just come with the perchase of a cd of sound effects or something? I’d really like to avoid being sued.
That website has the best sound effects ever. I have used that site for games, movies, and more. I highly recommend it!
freesound.org, free for commercial purposes, attribution in the credits required
I get a lot of stuff from www.sounddogs.com. Royalty free, fairly cheap, and you can buy a la carte.
I’ve checked out all three of these websites, and soundsnap looks like what i need. However, Im not entirely sure what this licence http://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/ from freesound.org is saying. It sounds like i could use any of the sounds as long as i include the author of each sound in the credits of my game, but im not sure. Would it make a difference if my game is free or costs money?
Yay I win!
Yes, it does make a difference if you make money from the game. That means that you made money, and they helped. Thats what commercial is.
It doesn’t matter to them if your game is commercial or not, either way, all they require is that you put their name in your credits since you used their sounds for your game, assuming you did.
Hey Eteeski,
There are a several great places to license sound effects online pretty inexpensively. My favorites at the moment are: AudioJungle, pond5, iStockAudio, and RevoStock. Each marketplace offers slightly different pricing and licenses, so take a look at what works best for you and your project. Off hand it seems like AudioJungle might be a good option for you - there are many low cost sound effects (starting at like $1 each for non-commercial projects [free iPhone game falls under this I believe] and $5 for commercial I think). There are all sorts of game sounds and sfx that would be great for iOS app and game development… and you won’t get sued because you’ve got a proper license.

Heres one that wasn’t mentioned : http://fxhome.com/sounds
I wouldn’t recommend making sound fx from scratch or downloading sounds and using them as is. I’d recommend either recording your own sound and editing it or creating a derivative from a downloaded sound. It can be challenging at first, but very quick and easy if you can get used to it - it’s not for everyone though.
