Blender Cookie- http://cgcookie.com/blender/
There are maya hot keys available for blender.

thanks for helping!

I still use Blender Cookie, highly recomended. If you want a book I suggest the Character Development with Blender. As of the date of this post it is one of the most up todate books on using blender. http://www.amazon.com/Character-Development-Blender-Jonathan-Williamson/dp/1435456254

They have changed the Blender UI a lot between 2.49 and 2.5 so if you go the book route besure to get a book that is using at least Blender 2.5

To get started, go here(this is THE BEST place to get started with Blender):

For more advanced stuff, use Blender Cookie like they’ve been saying. I highly recommend you get started at 3DBuzz though, the teacher goes through all of the interface and show you how to set it up the way you like it. A lot of people uninstall Blender RIGHT after they open it because they think the controls and interface sucks, BUT YOU CAN CHANGE THAT TO THE WAY YOU LIKE IT, and the 3DBuzz videos shows how to do that.

It just occurred to me that it would be easier to learn Blender if I had some concept art to go by. Does anyone have any good links for places that regularly post concept art that could be useful in learning to model with Blender?

Just take pictures of stuff and use them as backdrops… I think that would be easier than concept art, don’t ya think?? because you can take a front and side picture…

Yeah, that’s a good idea. I doubt my cat will stand still enough, but I’ll find something interesting to model that way.

I’d still appreciate any sites with this, as I think it would be good practice to work from someone else’s viewpoint, though.

you can find front and side views of all kinds of stuff. If you’re new to modeling, try simple objects. When I started modeling, about 6 years ago, I tried to model my head, I took a front and side picture of my head and loaded it as a backdrop. Here’s a picture of that model, I did this about 2 months after STARTING modeling! It’s not hard if you have a backdrop… (I did the body a few weeks ago… but the head a LONG time ago lol)

This topic crops up so often, there should really be a sticky about this

Use FaceGen modeler to get head images.

@wccrawford if your looking for concept art try out http://cghub.com/ i look at this site everyday at it has concepts from movies, games and also peoples personal work

Believe it or not, it seems like 3D Buzz teaches Blender as well, here’s the link to the downloads:

Highly recommended stuff. The Banana Man training may give you some ideas in terms of what to do with character development in some cases, too.
