Where to start?

My goal in life has always been clear to me, and what i want to be, but i’ve never known where to start, every day im trying out a new program, then trying to learn how it works and then i instantly presume that i have started at the wrong step and continue to look for answers, i’ve always wanted to become a programmer and make games, but i’ve never known where to start, however i’m going to keep this short and snappy, the games i want to make are games for the steam platform, but the truth is, i dont know where to start, you’ll always get to your goal, but the earlier i start, the earlier i can start developing games and perhaps become a well-known game company, but the truth is… I don’t know where to start, and it’s killing me, which is why im here today, seeking professional advice, and no, i’m not one of them guys to aspire to be something, and learn something, and then give up because it’s too hard, the proof is, 3 years later, the dream of creating games has always stayed with me, i just need some advice on where to start, i know it isn’t going to be easy, but i’m willing to do whatever is needed to fulfill my goal.

Thank you in advance.

  • Unity offers several tutorials: https://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials - Of course you should start with one of the Beginner tutorials like: Mini-Projects from the Recorded Video Training Archive - Unity Learn
  • Bookmark the tutorials and reference pages, you’ll need them a lot
  • If you do not have any programming experience: Find a C# tutorial for absolute beginners (yes, I recommend to use C# and not Unity Script)
  • Just play around with Unity and try things. You could use stuff made in a Tutorial and try to extend it for example.

It’s important to understand that making games can be very complex and it requires a lot of motivation, patience, endurance and especially time. Unity speeds many things up but you’ll still have to invest much time to learn how to use it.

Also: Start with very small projects - they will be challenging enough for the beginning! Don’t try to make an RPG or AAA shooter as your first game. That simply won’t work.
