I’m not quite sure where to start. i have succesfully finished both the ball rolling and the UFO game tutorials and had no real problems (other than a typo in the script here and there) following them.
my coding experience however is rather limited, i do have a basic understanding, but i’m by no means confident in my abilities.
for my next project I want to actually create something, i’m obviously not shooting for the next big hit or anything, i’d just like to further my familiarity with unity (in 2D)
what i had in mind was a very basic framework for what you could call an rpg in the style of “Don’t starve” or “Realm of the mad God”, at least when it comes to working in a 2D environment and how the player moves.
so my big question here is where do i start ? do i build something from scratch ? are there maybe more tutorials i should do first ? go online and throw together some copy-pasted code ?
You could also try expanding on the two tutorials you have completed.
Once I completed the Roll A Ball tutorial I went through and added extra areas divided by doors that opened after you picked up certain items, and a scoring system, a reset if the ball fell of the board, teleporters and such. Use what you have learned so far and expand on it.
Imho, it’s mandatory to understand everything that you use/create, to a certain extent. If you start too big, you’ll get lost in the stuff you don’t fully understand, you won’t get better as fast as you would with a solid foundation, and you might even lose interest in game development.
Basically, create whatever, but if you feel like you’re getting lost or losing control, take a step back.
I would suggest you try building off of the tutorials that you’ve finished just like @Ryeath said! We also have a great new intermediate level tutorial with an Adventure Game take. Building off of that one would be somewhat similar to what you want to do with your idea from Don’t Starve/Realm of the Mad God. The controller they build in that is click to move, but you could take what you’ve learned from the other learn projects and change that.
