Which computer should I buy to use unity?

Hi there,

I’m an architect looking to expand into VR. I need a new computer to use it on but I don’t know what to get. I’m tempted to get a laptop because it’d be nice to be mobile. Are there laptops that you experts recommend?

Am I crazy to want a laptop for this kind of work though? Should I get a desktop instead? If so, what do you recommend?

Thanks!

I have a top of the line 2015 MacBook Pro that serves me well. I’d recommend it to anybody who wants a Mac.

I’d look into a meaty gaming laptop, really. Something with an actual GTX 1060 or 1070 should be alright, but you could go higher. If you’re looking at VR development you’re probably ready to spend a fortune already

Virtual reality has steep requirements and like @orb mentioned you will want a gaming laptop in order to be able to work with it. Unfortunately gaming laptops typically have very limited battery life. Most of the units I’ve seen on the market have at most three to four hours compared to the seven to nine that is typical for a non-gaming laptop.

For gaming laptops I generally recommend people look at MSI. Just as an example here’s one intended for VR.

For VR demoing it can be expected that the laptop is literally just like a portable desktop though
Meet client, hook up equipment, wow the frell out of them, unplug and go home to write invoices.

Thanks so much guys!

So am I better off getting a desktop if it’s going to be so inefficient as a laptop?

A VR-capable computer would be cheaper in desktop form, yes.

Anything that runs Windows 10, (just not a Chromebook, I’d upgrade back to Windows but my Brother says no)
