I don’t know where to post this question, so I am posting it here.
I am thinking on buy a license of Unity, but I need to get a Mac computer first. My problem is that I don’t understand nothing about Macs.
Will this configuration be ok to work with Unity?
Powerbook G4 15’’ Widescreen Aluminium Processador Power PC a 1.5 Ghz Sistema operativo OSX Tiger - 10.4.10 1.25 GB DDR RAM 80 GB Disco Superdrive (gravador de DVD) Teclado Retroiluminado Saída vídeo DVI e S-Video Entrada e saída de áudio analógica e digital (óptica) 2 portas USB e 2 portas Firewire
What about this one? The iBook G4/1.42 14-Inch (Mid-2005 - Opaque White), features a 1.42 GHz PowerPC 7447a (G4) processor with a 512k “on chip” level 2 cache, 512 MB of RAM (PC2700 DDR SDRAM), a 60 GB (4200 RPM) Ultra ATA/100 hard drive, a slot-loading DVD±R/CD-RW “SuperDrive”, 4X AGP ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 graphics with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM, and standard AirPort Extreme (802.11g) and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR packed into an opaque white case with a 14.1" TFT XGA active matrix display (1024x768 native resolution).
Both of those should work just fine (I’ve used Unity on much worse), but maybe you should just spring for a new Mac… It will be worth it in the long run.
A G4 might run Unity but compared to even a new Mini you’re looking at a comparably slow IDE. Spring for a new Mini or even a year or two old iMac with the Intel Core 2 Duo chip if you can afford it. The experience will be much better.
Well, an iMac would be a better experience, but not a Mini, which has worse graphics than the Powerbook, although the CPU is quite a lot faster. I think the best advice is to get a refurb iMac of somewhat recent vintage (new would be ideal, but I’m guessing money is an issue).
Yes, money is an issue right now. I just bought a new Asus Laptop a few months ago. I also bought new furniture for my house and I just came back from on another country vacation. And I need to divide the money with a new Mac laptop and a Unity Pro license. So, money is definitly an issue.
