I like the HTC Desire HD. It has a common resolution and a lot of performance. On the other hand, a smartphone which has less performance is also good for testing. I guess your app should not only run on ‘high-end’-devices.
I have read that the Nexus series is always one of the series which get an Android update first. Don’t know if that’s true, may be someone else has some more info about that?

Well, I prefer smartphones with a virtual keyboard to see if the keyboard layer hides any content, textviews or buttons if it is expanded.
Another line of devices you could look into is the Archos internet tablets, i recently picked up a Archos 70 internet tablet for unity android development and it runs everything iv chucked at it so far. Quite high specs for the price. but if you are looking into these be warned that only the Archos 70 and 10 are capacitive so any below that will not allow for multi touch.
